Advanced Diploma si sawa na first degree. Mara nyingi advanced diploma zinatolewa na second tier Colleges ambazo zinaitwa Non-Univesrity Colleges. Hizi ni kama Institute of Finance Management (IFM), Tanzania Institute of Accountancy (TIA, zamani DSA), Dar es Slaam Institute of Technology (DIT), National Institute of Transport (NIT), n.k.

Hapa nchini kuna vyuo vikuu vinavyozikubali hizo Adv.

mzee hata IFM , DIT NAO WASHAONDOKA NAZO. LKN AVDANCE DIPLOMA SAWA NA DEGREE. KWASABABU ADVANCE DIPLOMA NI 3 YAERS. DEGREE BAADHI NI 3 YEARS

Even syllabi were more or less the same to degree. The issue was accredation authority one falls in (NACTE/HEAC currently TIU). Yes currently Institutes are required to offer degrees. But this will be a problem for those who were awarded Advanced Diploma (Previous ones)

Hilo ndio tatizo mkuu

THEY ARE EQUIVALENT BUT NOT EQUAL, mara nyingi hizi Advance diploma zilikuwa zinatolewa na Collages na zilikuwa ziko ki practical zaidi ya Degree (Much theory),

Tutabishana mpaka jioni, najua hilo as kuna watu wengi wenye Advanced Diploma hawatapenda kukubaliana nami. Kuna vyuo kibao duniani, ukienda kuomba kusoma Masters unaambiwa lazima ukasome Post Graduate Diploma.

Yes, kwenye professional exams za NBAA wanakubali Advanced Diploma in Accounting (only) manake focus yao ni kwenye few subjects (e.g. Business Law, QM, Financial Accounting, Introduction to Management Accounting n.k.) ambazo lazima uwe umezicover, and not issue ya certificate only na ndio maana wanachukua Course Outlines toka katika vyuo vya Biashara before hawajatoa exemptions. That's why ukienda na degree yako ya B.Com but major haikuwa accounting (may be ilikuwa Finance au Banking), usitegemee kupata exemption.

Ukienda kwenye soko la masomo ya biashara East Africa, I tell you, njoo na ADA yako halafu mtu mwingine aje na B.Com (Accounting) uone kama utakuwa at the same level kwenye ushindani. Nimekuwa involved kwenye interview panels nyingi East Africa, and nimekutana na wakenya wengi wakiponda Advanced Diplomas, na kuziheshimu degrees tena from some Universities not all in Tanzania / East Africa. Hii ni kutokana na idadi and perception ya degrees nchini Kenya na we should expect ziongezeke katika nchi kama Uganda. Naliongea hili from practical view and not story as nimeshaparticipate kwenye kuscreen watu and nimeona views za waganda, wakenya, wazimbabwe na pia waingereza.

Kwa ushauri wangu as nimekuwa kwenye hizo panels especially za wahasibu, ningependa kuwashauri ndugu zangu wenye Advanced Diplomas in Accounting, wahakikishe wanasoma CPA and ikiwezekana Post Graduate na Masters mapema before EAC haijatake-off kisawa sawa. Huu ni ushauri wa bure, and tusipende kujipa moyo, let's go by facts wadau otherwise tutakuja kukutana na maombi kibao ya kazi humu ndani.

.....naona wewe ndio unapotosha watu hapo na sina interest yeyote ya kupandisha Adv.dipl ya mtu yeyote, kama unaongelea UD na vyuo vyenu huko Africa may be lakini States practically nimeona watu wenye Adv dipl wameingia graduate schools tena za maana na kumaliza MBA zao vizuri tuu, most of the time they dont give a damn na BCom or any degree made in Africa or elsewhere wanajua substandard university huko ni order of the day, what matters kwao wakupe admission ni GMAT and evaluation points sio name degree or adv.diploma...nawashauri wote wenye advanced diploma kama wanataka masters go ahead and no need of post graduate (doesnt exist in US anyway).

..University of chicago(Booth School Of Business),Carleton University(Ottawa),Bradford(UK),Emporia State University(USA) hivyo ni vyuo highly respected kwa wanaojua shule, sasa nawajua watu(mmoja ndugu yangu) ambao ni advanced diploma holder wa Mzumbe(former) na IFM ambao walimaliza graduate studies zao hapo bila kupitia post graduate, muhimu advanced diploma isiwe less than 3yrs,nina uhakika vyuo vingi US kama Adv.Dipl yako is not less than 3 yrs and other requirement is OK watakuchukua tuu

THEY ARE EQUIVALENT BUT NOT EQUAL, mara nyingi hizi Advance diploma zilikuwa zinatolewa na Collages na zilikuwa ziko ki practical zaidi ya Degree (Much theory),

Equivalent is the right word. Equals is not. Degree is degree and Ad Dipl. is Ad Dipl. However they have similarity when it comes to accreditation.

vs. Universities vs. Schools

The difference between a college and a university is that a college just offers a collection of degrees in one specific area, while a university is a collection of colleges. When you go to a university you are going to be graduating from one of their colleges, such as the business college. As to which is better, it depends on what you want. Single colleges tend to be smaller while universities are bigger, but universities are better known.

Explanations from other Contributors:

  • Be aware that there is a very distinct difference in terminology between the USA and the rest of the world. In the US, there is very little difference academically between a "college" and a "university". In the U.S. the terms are synonymous; other countries use "college" to refer to some secondary schools, but "university" is always used to mean an institution of tertiary education and higher learning. Universities are usually larger and often contain multiple "colleges" within them. However, some of the top-ranked schools in the US have a name including "college" (ex. Dartmouth College). In other parts of the English-speaking world, the term "university" equates to the US use of "college" and the term "college" refers more to a trade or vocational school. Wikipedia has a page that describes the differences at wikipedia.org
  • Depends on the country you are in. Here in the UK, a university can award its own degrees and has a charter giving it various guarantees of independence. A college usually depends on a fully-fledged university validating its degrees, or may even be part of a university, as in Oxford or Cambridge colleges. Or a college may be little to do with degree-level education at all, such as a Further Education college.
  • Also don't forget Community Colleges. In that usage a college is very different than a University because a community college can't offer a 4 year degree (ie a B.A. or a B.S.). Community colleges can offer trade and technical certifications and training as well as the first 2 years of a four year program but they are unable to grant bachelors degrees.
  • In Canada a University is an education insitution that can grant degrees. (BA, BSc, MA, PHd, etc). Colleges can grant certificates or diplomas, but not degrees.
  • Maybe in Canada only, that universities are different with college. Most countries except Canada (developing or developed countries), colleges offers four (4) year course - Bachelor's Degree. Of course, universities are more prestigious and more expensive. Also, universities offers further studies after Bachelor's Degree like Master's Degrees, Doctorate Degree, and Post Doctorate Degree - These degrees can be achieved if you have earned Bachelor's Degree first. Basically, college are small and faculties (such as lecturers) are more focused to students. They usually focused on few courses (for Bachelor's Degree). In universities, professors handles more students and they most likely can't focused on each students. For your information, universities comprises of colleges with different courses. Colleges internationally maybe small, but some colleges (like in usa and others) have better standards than some universities....
  • Australia is in the same boat as Canada then. Here, Universities offer degrees, but Colleges, (also known as T.A.F.E.,) offer Diplomas and Certificates.
  • In France, college ?Grande Ecole? is highly reputing than University especially in Engineering. It is part of National Polytechnic Institute taking into account the selection criteria.
  • A university confers degrees up to PhD. A 4-year college confers Bachelors and Masters degrees. (BA,BS & MA, MS) A 2-year or community college confers the associate degree. ( AA or AS)
  • Universities offer more degrees than colleges offer.
  • The difference between a college and a university is that a college just offers a collection of degrees in one specific area, while a university is a collection of colleges. When you go to a university you are going to be graduating from one of their colleges, such as the business college. As to which is better, it depends on what you want. Single colleges tend to be smaller while universities are bigger, but universities are better known.
  • The main difference between a college and a university is that the university maintains research requirements for its instructors and that the university is, in essence, a more research focused institution.

A college can offer many majors with which to direct your studies, however, doctorate programs are more prone to be offered at universities where they have the money to support such programs.

This is probably related to the fact that Universities conduct research, which in turn allows them a certain degree of recognition, attracts a larger student body and affords them the capacity to offer higher learning options than a college can offer.
  • While the terms today are often used interchangeably, originally a college was a specific school teaching a specific subject, such as Education, Medicine, etc.
  • A University is a school made up of numerous colleges.
  • In general the difference is the level of degree that they can award. Colleges typically award Bachelor's degrees and Universities can confer Master's and Doctorate Degrees. The distinction has never been "enforced" by any organization.

College is also used to refer to a specific group within a University. For example, I have a Bachelor's degree from the College of Engineering of Texas A&M University.
  • A University consists of many colleges, as in the college of fine arts, botany, electrical engineering, i.e., many different courses of study. A College is a smaller institution which only has one course of study.
  • It is the same thing...
  • Well, it is right that Universities have multiple colleges inside of them because I graduated from a university and it came to be developed from being a College. In addition, universities have a lot more big space for studies and more courses to offer than colleges.
  • The name. I've got a perfect example: Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC. Five years ago, it was Methodist College. When it was a college it offered almost the same number of majors (they've added one since then), and the institution was structured just like it is now.

Another example is Dartmouth College. It's a research institution with many schools... 99.44% of all the institutions set up like Dartmouth are called universities, but Dartmouth has been a college since they opened and they see no reason to change.

Then again... I never heard of a "beauty university," but we have a "beauty college" in this town.
  • Sometimes a college could have called themselves a university, but chooses not to for historical reasons and/or continuity of its name. The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, founded in 1693, could have long ago called itself a university, with studies available in many areas, undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate. However, to maintain the historical title that dates back to colonial times, the college has never adopted the title of university.

Those of us who work here commonly refer to it as "the university," and as a Virginia Charter University, which has allowed William & Mary a large degree of independence from the commonwealth, all new employees are now "university employees" vice "state employees" as the college now has its own human resources structure separate from (but similar to) the commonwealth's HR structure. Current "state employees" also have the option to convert to "university employees."

Bottom line: While W&M operates at a level commonly equated to universities, it chooses to maintain the title of college for historical reasons. I suspect that Dartmouth College has the same or similar reasoning for not taking on the title of university, although it certainly would be justified in doing so.
  • A few notes on some of these comments:

    1. Community colleges absolutely do now offer bachelor degrees and not always in conjunction with a 4-year college or university. This is a new trend in the US and many are fighting it, because that wasn't the purpose behind the community college concept when it was first developed.

    2. Universities are not more prestigious than colleges. I defy anyone to tell me that MIT, which isn't a university, isn't as prestigious as Harvard University.

    3. In answer to this post: "A university confers degrees up to PhD. A 4-year college confers Bachelors and Masters degrees. (BA,BS & MA, MS) A 2-year or community college confers the associate degree. ( AA or AS)": There are many colleges that offer doctoral degrees. In the US, a "4-year college" does not offer a masters. That goes beyond the 4 years. As I wrote before, many community and 2-year colleges offer bachelor degrees.

Hiv UDSM mbona wana complications nyingi kwa wanaotaka kujiunga masters wakati huo huo entry qualification za kusoma Adv diploma hata hapo IFM ni sawa tu kwa mfano mimi na washkaji kibao tulikuwa tuliingia IFM na div one zetu za PCM nzuri na hata GPA zetu za Adv.diploma zipo freshi kwa nini watukatalie i think there's a need for the Autholiti responsible to give clear clalification about this.

Hivi kwanini advanced diploma zimefutwa naskia lakini SAUT wanaendelea kutoa kozi zake?
