Iran's Foreign Minister Calls Australia PM 'Weak Politician'
Iran’s foreign minister accused Australia of making unfounded allegations after Canberra expelled Tehran’s ambassador over links to antisemitic attacks.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Australia was targeting Iran because of public support for Palestine, calling the country’s prime minister a “weak politician” in a social media post.
Australia declared Iranian Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi and three other diplomatic officials “persona non grata” on Tuesday, giving them seven days to leave the country.
Australian authorities accused Tehran of involvement in antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne.
“I am not in the habit of joining causes with wanted war criminals, but Netanyahu is right about one thing: Australia’s PM is indeed a ‘weak politician,’” Araghchi wrote on X, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Iranian foreign minister attempted to dismiss the allegations by pointing to Iran’s Jewish population.
“Iran is home to one of the world’s oldest Jewish communities, including dozens of synagogues,” Araghchi said.
“Accusing Iran of attacking such sites in Australia while we do our utmost to protect them in our own country makes zero sense.”
Araghchi claimed Iran was being punished for Australian public opinion on the Israel-Palestine conflict.
“Iran is paying the price for the Australian people’s support for Palestine,” he wrote.
The foreign minister also accused Australia of trying to appease Israel, warning against such moves.
“Canberra should know better than to attempt to appease a regime led by war criminals,” Araghchi said. “Doing so will only embolden Netanyahu and his ilk.”
Iran has faced increasing international isolation over its support for armed groups and cross-border operations.
The Australian expulsion adds to a series of diplomatic confrontations that have seen Iranian personnel expelled from countries across multiple continents.
