Good win today. We perhaps played our best football of the season, besides the wins against Leverkusen. The line-up at the start was the strongest possible for United.
Unfortunately it seems some of that really good football today came when United had one striker(Rooney) playing. It's probably every United fan's dream that Moyes can find a proper way to accommodate both Rooney and RvP in the same line-up but so far, and as evidenced today, it's proving to be a challenge. It's easy to see RvP is frustrated just from his body language. SAF went with RvP last season as his go-to-guy and it showed what he can do when he has the full backing of the Manager, but this season with how Moyes has catered to Rooney and him clearly showing that Rooney is the guy he wants to build the team around it's starting to show that perhaps RvP is not handling not being the talisman well. With that being said he is still having a stellar season if you look at how many goals he has scored compared to the games he has actually played in.
With the formation employed today it's obvious it works best with one striker. Having both Rooney and RvP on the line-up it means shoving Mata out wide to allow Rooney to play behind RvP. This can seem like a good solution but it doesn't get the best out of Mata or even Rooney because he still has striker instincts that causes him to sometimes crowd up spaces occupied by RvP (perhaps that was what RvP was complaining about after the last game?). A solution to this could perhaps be the diamond with Mata just behind a front two of Rooney and RvP, with a midfield trio of Fellaini-Carrick-Cleverley. But this will mean losing width to the team, something which is very un-United, and having no room Januzaj. Moving on it seems Moyes might have to make a decision on who to play as central striker, Rooney or RvP, and judging from the contract Rooney just signed it seems he already has his favorite.
I think the back four employed today is probably United's best even though it's the least experienced one out of all the possible back fours that can be employed. Rafael is United's best RB and he needs to play in every game since there is not many other options in that position. Smalling clearly belongs in the CB position, he struggles at RB and it's only delaying his development as a proper CB by having him play out wide. Jones is great, he just seems to be unlucky with injuries. Evra is the best United has got at LB and thus he will always play, United should think of signing him for another season because it might be too much of a change to go into the next season with a completely new back four. What Moyes needs to do is stick with this back-four. The season is already lost so he might as well just let these kids play together and gain the experience of playing with each other because they will need it for the next season with the certain loses of both Rio, Vidic and perhaps Evra.
As far as the midfield is concerned, again the pairing of Fellaini and Carrick seems to be the most effective, if it needs to change then bring in Fletcher for either one of these two. In my opinion Cleverley is not suited to a two man midfield, at least not just yet, and he seems to do better when he plays as part of a three man midfield so maybe only use him in those situations or when the game is already won and the team needs is just looking to see out a game.
Hopefully Moyes does not change this line-up for the next few games, why fix something that is not broken. For the Champions League Mata is not available so he can just do a straight swap and play Kagawa instead. But then again it's Moyes and no one knows what the hell he is thinking half the time. If he changes the line-up for the next game it wont be the first time he has done that after the team performed really well. And that has been another frustrating aspect of him. Any other manager would have stayed as close as possible to the line-up that got him the best results in the season (against Leverkusen, both games). But let's stay positive and give him his due credit for getting everything right today, from the line-up to the substitutions, so Well done Moysey! Keep it up.
