LOAN WATCH: UPDATE ON EIGHT REDS
Eight Manchester United players are continuing to spend time away from the club on loan.

Tim Fosu-Mensah, Andreas Pereira, Sam Johnstone, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Dean Henderson, Regan Poole, Devonte Redmond and Matty Willock are the players currently enjoying loan spells elsewhere.

With the latest international break now upon us, ManUtd.com has taken a look at the loanees' progress in 2017/18 so far...

Sam Johnstone (Aston Villa)
The 24-year-old keeper has been a mainstay between the sticks for the Villans this term, featuring in all 11 matches of their Championship campaign, keeping five clean sheets. Most remarkably, he has made more saves than anybody else in the division and the Premier League so far, which has earned him a nomination for the Championship Player of the Month for September. Johnstone's impressive performances have provided the foundation on which the outfield players can build upon, which has seen Villa climb to seventh in the table with four straight wins - three of them being shut-outs.

Tim Fosu-Mensah (Crystal Palace)
It's fair to say it's been a difficult start to life at Selhurst Park for Fosu-Mensah, given Palace's early season form, but the 19-year-old defender has been one of the club's leading lights. The youngster has started all but one of the Eagles' seven league outings, missing the Old Trafford defeat due to his ineligibility, and his hearty defensive displays also saw him rewarded with a senior debut for the Netherlands as well.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson (Leeds United)
The pacey left-back has played every minute of the Whites' Carabao Cup campaign, which has seen them beat Port Vale, Newport County and Burnley, to set up a fourth-round tie with Leicester City. Borthwick-Jackson will hope to retain his place for a second outing against Premier League opposition, which will help his fight for a more regular starting spot.

Andreas Pereira (Valencia)
Pereira has grown accustomed to the Spanish game having spent the 2016/17 campaign on loan at Granada, and he has impressed for Valencia thus far. The attacking midfielder has featured made five La Liga appearances for the club this term, and he played a major role in Simone Zaza's opener in Sunday's 3-2 defeat of Athletic Bilbao when regaining his place in the XI.

Matty Willock (FC Utrecht)
The athletic central midfielder joined Utrecht in order to gain experience playing in Europe this term, and he impressed immediately, scoring on his full debut for the club in the 6-0 defeat of Ajax Amateurs in the KNVB Beker. And Willock has since made his first outing in the Eredivisie - appearing as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw with Vitesse Arnhem on Sunday.

Dean Henderson (Shrewsbury Town)
Henderson has made a fine start to life in Shropshire, featuring in 10 of Shrewsbury's 11 League One matches, keeping five clean sheets, and conceding just six goals. The England Under-21 international's efforts have seen the Shrews cement a place at the summit of the table, as well as maintaining an unbeaten start in the league - a feat only achieved by two other English teams - United and Manchester City.

Regan Poole (Northampton Town)
The classy Welshman has featured in all four of Northampton's most recent league outings and, despite the club's indifferent form, he has impressed with his no-nonsense performances in the middle of the park. Poole's efforts have also seen him become a regular for Wales' Under-21s.

Devonte Redmond (Scunthorpe United)
The 21-year-old central midfielder featured in both of the Iron's Carabao Cup ties earlier this season, but he has been restricted to just one outing in League One. However, he did impress in two Checkatrade Trophy wins over Sunderland Under-23s and Grimsby Town, playing 90 minutes in both games.

UNITED SUPPORTERS HAVE CAUGHT MARTIAL FEVER
The fervour surrounding Anthony Martial among the Manchester United faithful at the moment really is something special.

The Old Trafford public are usually pretty shrewd judges and there appears to be a growing belief that the sky is the limit for the fabulous Frenchman. In Moscow, his name was chanted during the UEFA Youth League tie ahead of the main event against CSKA. During the Champions League tie itself, there was a prolonged airing of his song during the half-time break.

On home turf, Marcus Rashford was selected on the left flank for the visit of Crystal Palace and, during the first real attack of the game, did brilliantly in beating Joel Ward to tee up Juan Mata's early opener. The England international followed it up with a driven free-kick for Marouane Fellaini to head home a third on the day before making way for Martial for the last 20 minutes or so.

There was a deserved ovation for Rashford but also a rousing reception for the substitute, who had already been cheered to the rafters every time he warmed up along the touchline. The fans appreciate both players are in top form and providing excitement every time they step on the field.

Sat in the Stretford End, there was a real buzz when Martial was brought on to torment an already well-beaten Palace side. It brought back memories of when Cristiano Ronaldo was on the bench during his first season at the club, with a sense of genuine expectation spreading through the stand. His first involvement was to trick Andros Townsend with an outrageous nutmeg that bordered on being cruel and, every time he received the ball, the anticipation was palpable.

The 21-year-old's display against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup had whetted the appetite as an individual performance to savour. This time around, he was only denied a sixth goal of the season by Wayne Hennessey's smart save, from Ander Herrera's fine through ball, but he managed to rack up another assist by setting up Romelu Lukaku's late fourth.

Martial has always been hugely popular, scoring a key goal against Liverpool on your debut is always going to endear yourself to the United fans. Yet the current buzz surrounding the forward has been ratcheted up to a whole new level. Jose Mourinho's men have been thrilling to watch but there is a sense that Martial is on the brink of taking his game to the next level.

With more challenges to come in October, starting at Anfield next time out, there will be the hope that the expectation and hype is justified. A recall for France should also be in his sights and, despite their embarrassment of riches, he could soon be impossible to overlook.

During the height of the silly season, during the transfer window, there were tabloid reports of Tottenham tabling a £25million bid for his services. Whether it was ever true or not it would surely be a criminal (and laughable) under-valuation of such a gifted young talent.

Fifty million down the drain? Fifty million's a bargain.

WHO IS THE WORLD'S BEST KEEPER?

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian believes David De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world.

The full-back is well placed to judge keepers as he operates in front of De Gea at club level and is an international colleague of Gianluigi Buffon with Italy. When asked to assess their capabilities last year, he suggested Azzurri star Buffon had the edge but De Gea's outstanding form this term has prompted a little rethink.

While, in Darmian's eyes, Buffon is the greatest keeper ever, he concedes it is impossible to ignore the consistently top-class form of a man who now has over 100 clean sheets for United and is playing better than ever.

"I know David very well and I think, at this moment, he is the best goalkeeper in the world," the defender told ManUtd.com. "He is very important for us and I think that save at Stoke [from Jese Rodrigues) was incredible.

"I think Gianluigi is the best goalkeeper of all time. He's also a good guy. So I am lucky to play with two goalkeepers like this. Of course, it's close [between the two]. I don't know. I think David is the best goalkeeper in the world and Gianluigi is the best goalkeeper of all time.

"I think they are similar because they are very strong and they make very good saves. They also have good personalities."

The two keepers faced off in a recent World Cup qualifier in Madrid, won 3-0 by Spain, as both countries bid to reach next year's finals in Russia.

"We are in a tough group," Darmian conceded. "Spain are, I think, one of the big teams but we try to reach our objective and that is to reach the World Cup. And I hope to see David in Russia!"

MARTIN EDWARDS: MY BEST SIGNINGS FOR UNITED
Former Manchester United chairman Martin Edwards has revealed the five signings he considers to be the best ones he made during his time at the Reds' helm.

Edwards, whose new book Red Glory is available at Old Trafford's Megastore, spoke to MUTV at the stadium recently and was asked to narrow down his best moves in the transfer market.

"I want to name a five and not in order because it is value for money," he said, before recalling a quintet including a player who "revolutionised the club" and another who was an "absolute bargain".

Watch the video above to discover who Edwards selects as his top buys for United.
