The late, great George Best made his first appearance for United on this day in 1963.

Mesut Ozil is one of a number of high profile Arsenal players who is out of contract next summer and according to reports in Germany he's looking for a move to Manchester United.

The German has been linked with moves to Old Trafford before and the 28-year-old has yet to sign a new deal with the Gunners so would be allowed to leave on a free next summer.

German outlet SportBild claim Ozil is not interested in staying at the Emirates next season and is eyeing up a move to Old Trafford.

Ozil previously played under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid and is reportedly keen on a reunion with his old boss.

With the German's recent performances United would be better sticking with their current attacking midfield options rather than bringing Ozil in to the squad.

Are Manchester United now built to play on the counter-attack?

Romelu Lukaku's arrival has given Manchester United pace and power in attack
Jose Mourinho has helped turn Manchester United into the kings of the counter-attack. It could be critical to their chances in the Premier League and in Europe, writes Adam Bate.

"On the counter-attack they are good with their pace," said West Ham's Slaven Bilic. His side were beaten 4-0 on the opening weekend. The same fate befell Paul Clement's Swansea. "They punished us," he said. "We were 2-0 down, but a loose pass, they are so strong on the counter-attack." It has been one of the themes of Manchester United's season so far.

United have had more fast breaks than any other Premier League team
According to Opta, United have had more fast breaks than any other side this season, scoring from two of them. That is as many as the rest of the Premier League combined. The sample size is small but the data supports what is noticeable to the naked eye. Jose Mourinho's men appear to be a much more dynamic proposition this term.

"It is a difficult situation to change the dynamics," he said soon after taking over. "It would be easier for me to have 20 new players and start from zero. For two years, they had some principles of play that are not mine. Clearly, they are not. Of course, after two years of work, there are things in their brain that are automatic, and that is difficult to change."

New personnel have helped, although Marcus Rashford broke through under Van Gaal and Anthony Martial, the scorer of a goal on the counter-attack at Swansea, was a high-profile signing by the Dutchman. Curiously, it is the replacement of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a headline Mourinho buy, that has seen United morph into something altogether more potent.

Something more recognisably Manchester United.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is predicting big things for United striker Romelu Lukaku
Ibrahimovic was the team's target man last season and a key figure. But Romelu Lukaku's propensity to run in behind has added a new dimension to the attack - stretching defences and giving Paul Pogba more space in which to play. Lukaku is now part of an attacking trident that can capitalise with their speed in the latter stages when opponents tire.

That change is evident in the data too. Opta's sequence metric can help illustrate a team's passing style by showing the speed at which they progress the ball up the pitch. Measured in metres per second, Manchester United's speed of attack is up on last season - by more than 10 per cent across the first three matches.

'Facing Rooney will be weird'
Juan Mata admits it will be "weird" facing Wayne Rooney when Manchester United welcome Everton to Old Trafford on Sunday.
That owes much to Lukaku's influence. As was obvious against Basel on Tuesday, when his channel running won a corner inside the first minute, he is a player who can quicken the attack. It is no coincidence that, in his absence, Everton direct speed of attack is the lowest in the Premier League at just 0.94 metres per second.

Ibrahimovic still has much to offer, his 28 goals last season are testament to his influence. Expect Mourinho to turn to him again, particularly when United face packed defences and need his presence in the penalty box. But breaking down opponents at Old Trafford is not the only issue that needs addressing from last season if United are to progress.

Not only did United fail to win away to the top eight in the Premier League last season but they also managed to score only twice in those seven matches. Mourinho remains a master at stifling quality opposition, but a greater counter-attacking threat was required to make their containment game more effective. They have it now and that could change everything.

Manchester United youngsters Demetri Mitchell and Kieran O’Hara have been added to the side’s Champions League squad.

Mitchell, 20, made his debut last season in a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace but has not made an appearance for Jose Mourinho’s first-team since the Old Trafford clash.

Goalkeeper O’Hara, meanwhile, is yet to play for United’s senior team but the 21-year-old was on the bench as Mitchell made his debut against Palace back in May.

Both Mitchell and O’Hara have been included on the B list after Mourinho named his 25-man squad for this season’s Champions League campaign last week.

Manchester United hotshot Marcus Rashford annoys Liverpool great Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard will have to get used to Marcus Rashford being a thorn in his side - and he knows it.

The Liverpool legend heaped praise on Manchester United's young Mancunian striker after he hit his third goal of the season in the Champions League win over Basel at Old Trafford.

And while he is delighted Rashford will be a star for the national team - it irks him that his talent is making United stronger.

"He’s got a huge future ahead of him," Gerrard said. "He’s got pace, he’s got everything to his game.

"It’s great that he’s English. Not so good that he’s a United player from my point of view.

Rashford maintained his remarkable record of scoring on his competition debut, having scored in his first Premier League, Europa League, League Cup, England and England u21s games.

Marcus Rashford scored against Basel.

“Yeah, it’s a good feeling to finish off scoring on debut,” Rashford told MUTV .

“I’m happy with the goal but most of all I’m happy with the three points, and it’s a solid performance for us to build on.

“Every team that we face is going to be able to cause us problems.

“We have to respect them and defend in the right manner and then try and cause them problems going the other way.”

Man Utd have genuine hope of pulling off incredible £184m double swoop next summer

Man Utd chief Ed Woodward is reportedly hatching a plan to lure both Gareth Bale and Antoine Griezmann to Old Trafford next summer.

Both superstars were linked with a move to United this past summer, but neither eventually arrived with Romelu Lukaku emerging as their marquee signing this year to follow on from Paul Pogba 12 months ago.

According to the Manchester Evening Newsthough, Man Utd’s commercial power has been on full display as nine of their players came in the top 30 most popular replica shirts sold since May 1 with Sports Direct, with Pogba and Lukaku holding number one and two.

Along with other data and figures, the report claims that this has given Woodward the justification needed to convince investors that these are sensible moves and shows that Man Utd can continue to attract the world’s biggest stars.

Mourinho: Only two United players not under our 'control'

Zlatan-Ibrahimovic.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Michael Carrick have decisions to make on their careers next summer – the only players whose future Jose Mourinho does not believe Manchester United have under “control” beyond this season.

Maurino:
" I am pleased with the performance, but i remember every second of the game. I don't forget the ball hitting the bar at 2-0 and Diafra Sakho coming onto the pitch. In spite of speaking about Sakho at half-time, he was free and almost scored.
If the score was 2-1, the last 20min, instead of enjoying trying to score more goals, it would have been about not conceding the equaliser, for not losing two points."
