Owen praise for Hernandez

May 3, 2011
By ESPNsoccernet staff

Manchester United striker Michael Owen says Javier Hernandez's emergence at Old Trafford has put him in the shade and claims the Mexican is a better version of his current self.

Javier Hernandez celebrates with Wayne Rooney after another goal

With his two-year contract due to expire in the summer, it is now anticipated Owen will be leaving the club this summer and one of the reasons for that will be Hernandez's stellar form since his arrival at Old Trafford as a virtual unknown from Mexican club side Chivas.
There are plenty who make a direct comparison between the 22-year-old's rapid movement and Owen and while the former England striker is not convinced it is true of his early days, Owen accepts there are obvious similarities.
''I wouldn't say he is similar to how I was in the early stages of my career,'' he said. ''But with injuries and the way I have adapted my game, he is probably quite similar to what I do now, apart from he is a bit sharper.
''He is 10 years younger of course, so maybe he is a better version of the current Michael Owen. Javier has been the surprise package this year without a doubt.
''He is certainly sharp and is a cracking lad as well. That probably isn't that important to the people who just want to see him scoring goals but it is important for those who are around him and at the club in general.''
Not that Owen has written off his own chances of making a contribution. As, along with Dimitar Berbatov, the 31-year-old has already been promised a starting berth for Wednesday's Champions League semi-final by Sir Alex Ferguson, as United look to defend their two goal advantage.
''Javier's partnership with Wayne Rooney has really clicked,'' said Owen. ''But let's not forget that Dimitar is still our top scorer. He has only not been scoring lately because he has not been playing as much.
''Overall, the strikers have dovetailed quite well. Everyone has chipped in at certain parts of the season. Wayne almost carried us right the way through last season. This year other people have come in to fill the void. It has been a great effort all round.''

In transfer speculation, the Daily Mail claims Real Madrid have held talks with Udinese winger Alexis Sanchez, scuppering Sir Alex Ferguson's chances of signing the £30million rated Chilean international in the summer.

Ferguson - Van der Sar should quit

May 3, 2011
Sir Alex Ferguson has urged Edwin van der Sar to ignore the dressing room pleas for him to extend his career by another season and quit whilst he is still on top of his game.

GettyImagesThe clock is ticking on Edwin van der Sar's career

Van der Sar, 40, announced his intention to retire earlier this year. Since then, he has maintained an impressively high standard, leading to calls from Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand amongst others to abandon his plans. However, Ferguson is fearful that Van der Sar's standards may start to slip rapidly and without warning.
And the Manchester United boss is too much of a fan to want that to happen.
''If I was giving advice to Edwin van der Sar, right now, I would say retire,'' said Ferguson. ''He is at the absolute pinnacle of his career but sometimes, when a player gets to that age, age comes onto you very suddenly.
''I wouldn't want to see Edwin van der Sar in that situation. He deserves to go out at the very top and hopefully he does that.''
Van der Sar is aiming to land the third Champions League triumph of his career, in addition to his fourth Premier League title since moving north from Fulham in 2005.
''His career has been absolutely fantastic,'' said Ferguson. ''It is not just what he does on the football field. It is how he has handles himself as a professional and a human being.
''He is absolutely outstanding. In our dressing room at half-time and before games, he is absolutely fantastic. My advice to him is that this is the time.
''There is no reason for him to risk another year and maybe drop below his standard.''

Howard Webb will referee Manchester United v Chelsea

• World Cup official to take charge of potential title decider
• Referee was at centre of Twitter row earlier this season

Howard Webb will referee this weekend's potential Premier League title decider at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Chelsea.Webb was at the centre of controversy in January after Ryan Babel posted a mocked-up picture of the official wearing a Manchester United shirt on Twitter in the aftermath of United's FA Cup win over Liverpool. The referee had awarded a first-minute penalty to the home side – a decision described by the Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, as "a joke" – and dismissed Steven Gerrard in the 32nd minute for a two-footed tackle on Michael Carrick.

Webb also caused a furore after awarding United a controversial penalty against Tottenham at Old Trafford in April 2009 that sparked United's comeback from 2-0 down to win 5-2. He later described it as "not the greatest decision of my career" and was dropped to the Championship the following weekend.

Since then Webb has struggled to avoid controversy – with his refereeing of the World Cup final last year coming under particular scrutiny – although he took charge for Arsenal's visit to Old Trafford in December with little drama.

Since mmeamua kuwa biased na kuweka stats za upande mmoja ili kuwe na balance ebu tuangalie stats za Howard Webb akichezesha mechi za Chelsea.

Stats za Telegraph
After 8 occasions when Webb has been in charge of Chelsea games, he has never awarded a penalty against them.

September 20th 2009: Stone wall penalty not awarded against Chelsea
At 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Ricardo Carvalho brought down Robbie Keane in the box, but no penalty was given.

The Guardian: Absolute 100%, 24-carat stonewall penalty to Spurs. Not given. Keane was through, but in by what may well have been an attempted control from Lennon, Carvalho slides in just as Keane is set to pull the trigger. Not a world class decision from the man who is supposed to be England’s world class refereee

April 10th 2010: Stone wall penalty not awarded against Chelsea II
At 0-0 in the FA Cup semi-final, John Obi Mikel brought down Agbonlahor in the box but nothing was given.

The Mirror: No surprise that Webb bottled Villa’s nailed-on Wembley penalty claim
In the same game, John Terry was guilty of making a horrific challenge on James Milner, clearly worthy of a red card, but was just shown a yellow card.

Conclusion, Howard Webb mara nyingi amekuwa mkarimu mara nyingi kwa timu zote mbili Chelsea na Manchester United.

Rio: Still work to do

The Reds may be within touching distance of a place in a third Champions League final in four years, but Rio Ferdinand insists United still have a job to do against Schalke tonight.
Goals from Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs in Germany last week have put United firmly in the driving seat in the last four tie, but Ferdinand won't be taking anything for granted in the return leg as Sir Alex's men aim to seal a spot at Wembley.
"You've got to approach it in the right manner and make sure no complacency creeps in," the defender told United Review.
"We played really well in Germany - I don't think many teams in the world could have dealt with our attacking play over there.
"But tonight is a different game altogether and we know we still have a job to do if we're to get through to the final.

Papers: Fletch provides boost

04/05/2011 09:10

The big-game hunter
These are the May evenings which can make or break a player and the hollow look on Darren Fletcher's face two years ago as he dragged himself on to a coach outside the Emirates Stadium after Manchester United had booked a place in the Champions League final told you which of two experiences he was living through. It should have been a night of euphoria but Italian referee Roberto Rosetti's red card had deprived Fletcher of a place against Barcelona in Rome and everyone was affected. "I thought before the game it may have been a problem," the United manager admitted, "because he is a big-game player. And he was a big loss for us. It's difficult to say how big." At Old Trafford tonight Ferguson steps towards another grand finale nursing the same anxieties about his midfielder. Another kind of haunting has beset the 27-year-old Scot this spring – a virus which has afflicted him since the eve of United's defeat to Liverpool on 6 March. Only this evening, after 12 games without the Scot, can Ferguson finally look forward to Fletcher stepping over the white line again, almost certainly from the substitutes' bench.
Ian Herbert, The Independent
Herbert regards Darren Fletcher's timely return to fitness as a massive boost for the Reds and goes on to write: "Fletcher will restore steel where United have needed it."
Elsewhere, The Sun claims Sir Alex will rest Wayne Rooney this evening so the striker is fresh for Chelsea's visit on Sunday, while the Manchester Evening News reckons Dimitar Berbatov is playing to "save his Manchester United future" tonight.
