Rio ready to fire United to glory

May 4, 2011

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has played down concerns regarding his fitness and claims he is ready to lead the club to Champions League and Premier League success.

Ferdinand has been troubled by a succession of problems for the past three seasons and made only his 26th appearance of the current campaign against Arsenal on Sunday, compared to the 43 that have been amassed by central defensive partner Nemanja Vidic.
The England international's most recent problem was a calf strain that kept him on the sidelines for six weeks, since when he has been rested for a number of games by manager Sir Alex Ferguson and it would be no surprise if he sits out Wednesday night's Champions League semi-final second leg against Schalke.
If Ferguson does rest the centre-back, it will only be because he wants Ferdinand fresh, because the player himself is happy with his fitness just now.
"People keep going on about how many games I have missed and compared to the usual amount I play you could say it has been a bit of a sporadic season for me,'' Ferdinand told United Review. "But I have been pleased with my performances and I feel back to my best now.
"My back is fine and hopefully I can put the niggling calf problems I have had this season behind me. I feel good and to be involved in the big games at this stage of the season, fighting for trophies, is what you want as a footballer. We just need to make sure we get the job done.''
If Ferdinand is left out, Chris Smalling is his likely replacement. The England Under-21 star has enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign following his arrival from Fulham and Ferdinand is convinced that in his fellow Londoner and Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans, United already have their defence of the future.
"Chris has been fantastic,'' said Ferdinand. "He and Jonny are great young players with big futures at this club. In time I am sure those two will be the bedrock of the team.''

ALEX FERGUSON PLANS TO 'REST REFEREE HOWARD WEBB'
Howard Webb has been on United's books for several years now

Sir Alex Ferguson is planning to rest his star performer Howard Webb to prevent 'a needless injury.
Man United's 12th man Howard Webb, whose dressing room locker is right next to Rio Ferdinand's, said:
"Yeah, it's a massive win for the me and the lads. The gaffer told us all in his pre-match talk to get in their faces, and work hard for each other.

"Howard's a great servant to the club," said Sir Alex. "And he's a real role model for the younger lads. He's always first on the training pitch in the morning and the last to leave. He practices pointing at the spot, and sending opponents off for hours on end. But I fear if he carries on at the same intensity he'll pick up an injury that could see him out for months.

"And that's a risk we can't take. He's just too important for us, his ratio of games played to penalties given is almost one per match, which are amazing stats."

Manchester United's club shop has just released its sales figures which indicate that 'Howard Webb' is now the most requested name on the back of their replica shirts, and that if his popularity grows they may be forced to rename the Stretford End in his honour by changing it to the 'Massive-Bell End', or MBE for short.

Manchester United are favourites to win the tie according to Sky Bet, who make the Red Devils 4/7 to win at Old Trafford. A Schalke win is avaliable at 11/2 while a draw at full time is placed at 11/4.

Welcome to live coverage of tonight's Champions League semi-final second leg between Manchester United and Schalke at Old Trafford. United lead 2-0 from last week's clash at the AufSchalke Arena but they will be wary of Schalke's attacking threat after scoring five goals at the San Siro last month. Teams will be uploaded shortly and kick off is at 1945. Send all your e-mails on the night's game to jack.woodfield@bskyb.com

Ben Gleesonwrites: "Cant believe the team selection for tonights game. I can appreciate that the game at the weekend versus Chelsea is a title-decider, but dropping 9 of your first 11 for a champions league semi-final? This is ridiculous. Schalke ARE a good team, you cannot judge them simply on one bad performance, they must have been playing well to reach this stage of the competition, right?. Predicting a dour 0-0."

A one name man of mystery, Geoff writes: "Could be a tough game for United tonight especially as we've got our reserves out. I still reckon we'll pull through and win 1-0, berbatov the scorer. Big opportunity for him tonight too by the! way"

Andrew Kay writes: "I WAS confident of another final but the names Evans, O'shea, Gibson on the team sheet for a Champions League semi-final I might just check the refund policy on mu flight to London. Raul must be delighted with the defence he has to play against tonight - just imagine if he were five years younger!"

Al Joneswrites: "OK the team is much weaker than the first leg, but people are forgetting a few facts. We are at home, the lads who are playing tonight all have a point to prove, especially Berba, and we have two away goals. Keep the faith in the squad this is the kind of opportunity fringe players yearn for. 2-1 United, Berba and Nani to score."

Hivi saf anataka tupite kweli? Hii line up ya Evans, o'shea, Gibson inanipa ugonjwa wa moyo.

4 Sergio Escudero does well on the left touchline before whipping in a cross which is cleared by Chris Smalling. Good, pacey start to the game at Old Trafford.
3 Schalke clear and Jefferson Farfan looks to bomb up the right wing before United intercept possession, with Darron Gibson searching for Nani who strays offside.
2 Kyriakos Papadopouls fouls Nani and Man United win a corner from the resulting free-kick.
1 Schalke press early as Raul and Julian Draxler hound down Edwin van der Sar forcing the United keeper into a hurried clearance.

7 Schalke have been the game full of life as they close down every United player with the ball forcing a throw-in after O'Shea is hounded down by Farfan.
5 United hound down Draxler well, as Anderson plays in Nani whose great feet create a shooting opportunity. The ball goes out for a corner which Christoph Metzelder clears.
5 Raul tries a delicate chip into Farfan but Jonny Evans reads it and cuts out the pass down the line to the winger.
