Antonio Valencia was United's star man.
De Gea: Could do nothing about either Galatasaray goal but struggled with his kicking in his first game back after the Euros. 6

Valencia: Mourinho's system is designed to let the full-backs get forward. Valencia created goals for Ibrahimovic, Rooney and Fellaini and he might be winning over his new manager. 8

Shaw: Looking like the player who was doing so well before suffering a broken leg last season. United's system this season should suit him. 7

Bailly: Strong and quick but still very raw. Had a couple of moments of inexperience that suggest Mourinho might still need another centre-back. 6

Blind: Calm and composed on the ball but lacking the physical stature of a top-class centre-back. In line to start at Bournemouth with Smalling suspended. 6

Schneiderlin: Seemingly battling with Carrick to start at Bournemouth. Like United, he started well but Sneijder had got the better of him by the time his half ended. 6

Ander Herrera might drop out when/if Pogba arrives.

Herrera: Started well but drifted out of the game as the first half wore on. Likely to be the one who drops out of Mourinho's preferred team if/when Pogba arrives. 5

Mkhitarayan: Looked isolated on the right and only got more involved when he moved inside. Already putting pressure on Rooney to play at No.10. 6

Martial: Bothered Galatasaray with his pace but didn't see enough of the ball to really hurt them. Just needs more game time to get fully fit. 6

Rooney: Had a disastrous first half but scored twice in the second half, the first with a good finish from an awkward cross. Still needs to do more to prevent questions about his place in the team. 6

Ibrahimovic: You can't ask for much more than scoring with a scissor kick on your debut. Good start to his United career. 7

Substitutes:

Fellaini (for Herrera 45): Scored with a looping header 6

Carrick (for Schneiderlin 45): Crossed for Mata's goal 6

Young (for Mkhitarayan 45): Played on the right wing and at right-back 6

Lingard (for Martial 45): Struggled to get involved 6

Rashford (for Ibrahimovic 45): Incredible pace to win the penalty 7

Romero (for De Gea 67): Had very little to do 6

Rojo (for Bailly 67): Untroubled as Galatasaray went to pieces 6

Jones (for Blind 67): Made one crunching challenge 6

Darmian (for Shaw 67): Solid at left-back 6

Mata (for Rooney 67): Scored and impressed as the No.10 7

Memphis (for Valencia 67): Looked good 7

United player ratings: Valencia impresses but Herrera fails to shine

Rashford should replace Rooney in Manchester United attack
Wayne Rooney scored twice but the Manchester United captain is a liability in Jose Mourinho's attack and Marcus Rashford could be a starter.

Rooney should be dropped
In his first outing since labouring against the minnows of Iceland, Wayne Rooney produced a 45-minute homage to that wretched night in Nice. The Manchester United skipper's first-half performance in the No.10 role summarised why he is unsuitable for the role: slow, a liability in possession and immobile.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were substituted at the pause and Rooney only seemed to stay on in an attempt to improve his fitness. He improved immensely, finishing tidily from an Antonio Valencia cross and netting from 12 yards to regain United's lead, yet there have been plenty of performances in the five years since Rooney last flourished as a No.10 to suggest he is finished there. And they were competitive matches.

With Rooney behind the striker, the midfield is too detached from the front four and more aggressive opponents can run at United while facing little resistance. Juan Mata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are cleverer and slicker options than Rooney as the playmaker, but 4-2-3-1 does not seem suitable for this squad.

Can Valencia kick on?
What was more remarkable than Ibrahimovic's spectacular scissor kick was Valencia's passable cross, albeit via a deflection. Then the Ecuadorian assisted Rooney's equaliser. And then Valencia delivered for Marouane Fellaini's header.

Christened 'Turn-Around Toni' around four years ago, Valencia is fortunate to still be a United player and his performance in Gothenburg was a throwback to his 2010 efficiency. Jose Mourinho demands his full-backs play adventurously yet it was remarkable to watch Valencia attack so consistently and effectively. Even Timothy Fosu-Mensah, his right-back competitor, tweeted his approval.

Valencia was excellent

The challenge now for the 31-year-old is to ensure the performance was not an anomaly, especially with competition from Fosu-Mensah and Matteo Darmian.

Rashford has to be considered as a starter
If Mourinho is to retain 4-2-3-1 then Marcus Rashford would arguably complement the attack better than Rooney. Pace is essential in a forward line and United are unlikely to win the league if they have Rooney playing off the 34-year-old Ibrahimovic.

The Sweden great's reaction to Rashford's run which resulted in Fernando Muslera upending him summarised how impressive the Wythenshawe lad is. Ibrahimovic rose to applaud the teenager and looked aghast at just how rapid his new partner was.

Rashford quickened United's attack

Rashford could occupy the right flank with Mkhitaryan in the middle.

Ibrahimovic's body is amazing
Rooney is four years younger than Ibrahimovic but it did not look like it in Gothenburg. Ibrahimovic has executed audaciously awesome goals before and he did it again just 190 seconds into his United career. Anthony Martial, ostensibly irked at Ibrahimovic inheriting his No.9, was the first to congratulate him.

Ibrahimovic's athleticism and physique could compensate for his lack of pace. Provided he is surrounded by it on the flanks and in the hole, he should flourish. Even if Rashford makes runs down blind alleys it could free up more room for Ibrahimovic.

Herrera and Schneiderlin struggle
Morgan Schneiderlin benefited from playing beside Ander Herrera last season, so his ineffectual performance at the Ullevi Stadium could be put down to ring-rustiness after two training sessions. Herrera, though, had minutes against Wigan and Dortmund yet rivalled Rooney for United's worst player in the first-half.

Playing in a deep-lying role is not to the Basque's strengths and his indiscipline worked against him under Louis van Gaal. He would benefit from the switch to 4-3-3 but Mourinho is reluctant to trial that - at least until Paul Pogba arrives - which suggests he is unconvinced by Herrera forcing the issue as the main attacking midfielder.
