Tactical Preview:
Manchester United v West Bromwich Albion

(let's share it together)

Manchester United return to Premier
League action and face West Bromwich
Albion this weekend, keen to get back to
winning ways in the Premier League after
two bore draws against Manchester City
and Crystal Palace
.
With an international break coming up
after this next round of league fixtures,
there shouldn?t be too much need for
rotation when it comes to selection.
Morgan Schneiderlin may or may not be
available following illness and Louis van
Gaal will have to consider sticking with
the set-up that beat CSKA Moscow or one
that allows Ander Herrera back into the
team. At the back Phil Jones may be
included ahead of Daley Blind to deal
with West Brom?s added aerial threat in
open play and at set-pieces.

West Bromwich Albion are likely to
employ similar tactics to many teams that
have visited Old Trafford in the last 15
months; they?ll sit deep, defend in
numbers and look to spring the counter-
attack and try to steal a result. Even a
draw is a great outcome for the Baggies.
United will have to be alert too, West
Brom came to Old Trafford last season and
delivered the textbook smash-and-grab,
scoring with virtually their only shot on
target and taking the three points back to
the Midlands.

They?ve evolved since then too. In
Solomon Rondon they?ve added a big,
strong centre-forward capable of holding
on to possession and acting as a focal
point for each West Brom attack. Phil
Jones? selection may be key in nullifying
his threat on Saturday, rather than the
selection of the slightly smaller, more
lightweight Daley Blind.

West Brom used Rondon?s aerial prowess
consistently last weekend. He only won
46% of his aerial duels, but the frequency
with which West Brom played the ball
into Rondon aerially showed a pattern to
their play. Rondon has scored a header in
each of his last two league appearances
too, so United cannot afford to allow
crosses into the box or long balls played
into Rondon if they want to nullify his
threat.

Using their record signing in this way can
play into what will inevitably be a
counter-attacking game-plan from Tony
Pulis? side. Being able to rely on a striker
to hold the ball up or win it in the air in
this way allows West Brom to play long
passes out of defence and turn defence to
attack in a matter of seconds. If Rondon
can hold the ball up for his teammates
then the pace of Stephane Sessegnon and
Saido Berahino suddenly becomes a very
real danger for United on the break.

Ultimately though, if Manchester United
are going to win this game on Saturday it
won?t be about whether they?ve nullified
West Brom or stifle any particular threat.
Manchester United will win this game if
they play with quick, aggressive
possession and play with an intensity we
started to see reemerge against CSKA
Moscow, as opposed to the pedestrian,
laborious passing we saw against City and
Palace.

In order to do that, Manchester United
will need to break down West Brom?s
deep defensive block. United will need to
pass the ball quickly and intricately,
offering plenty of options in attacking
areas. If they are predictable and slow
then West Brom can move players into the
correct positions and shut off space and
prevent the ball getting into dangerous
areas.

In this fixture last season West Brom
played so defensively that they conceded
81% of the possession and rarely had a
player in Manchester United?s half. By
defending in such numbers it became
easy to cut out so many of United?s
attacks because individually they had less
ground to cover. Couple this with a
slower, measured passing style, United
rarely played with the intensity or the
unpredictability to break through West
Brom?s packed defensive unit.

That unpredictability comes with multiple
options in attack, something United finally
had against CSKA Moscow. With Rooney
behind Anthony Martial, United played
with a 4-4-2 at times and the impact it
had on their midfield as well as the way
they played in advanced areas is
something that United will need again
against West Brom.

By playing with a midfield four,
Manchester United?s build-up play
involved players playing further apart
from each other than usual. As the attack
developed, the passes made by United
players were hit over longer distances and
at greater speed, meaning that when the
next recipient received the ball he had
more time in possession, the defence
hadn?t been able to readjust and shut
down the space and United always had
two options in advanced areas in Martial
and Rooney, rather than just one player
who was, more often than not, easy to
isolate and nullify the two opposition
centre-backs.

Looking at Michael Carrick?s passing
against CSKA Moscow, it is easy to
identify how often Carrick received the
ball in central areas and was able to make
long passes into wider areas, switching
the play and probing for openings. Too
many short passes in front of a block
defence can slow the game down and
make it hard to break down, so United
will need to get in behind and down the
sides of West Brom if they are to make
the breakthrough and win the game as
comfortably as they are expected to.

Matteo Darmian is suspended for
Saturday's game after accumulating five
yellow cards in domestic competition.
