Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Ambassador Francis Muthaura have now stepped aside from their government positions. But Kenyatta will however continue being Deputy Prime Minister.

The two senior government officials are said to have requested President Mwai Kibaki to step aside owing to the confirmation of ICC cases against them on Monday this week. Nairobi Metropolitan Development Minister Robinson Githae has taken over as Finance Minister in an acting capacity. The powerful Internal Security Permanent Secretary Francis Kimemia will take over from Muthaura as acting Head of Civil Service and Secretary to the Cabinet. Mutea Iringo will now be the acting PS for Internal Security docket held by Kimemia. The move by the two top government officials came at a time when pressure was mounting for the two to step aside until their cases before the ICC are finalized. Earlier in the day, four cabinet ministers and over 10 MPs allied to the Party of National Unity held a news conference and asked the two not to step aside as agitated by a section of leaders including civil society groups. Pre-Trial Chamber Judges on Monday ruled that four Kenyan suspects' cases before ICC should proceed to a full trial. As
predicted by Kumekucha less than 24 hours ago, Uhuru Kenyatta has handed his
resignation to President Mwai Kibaki. Also handing in his resignation was fellow
ICC indictee Ambassador Francis Muthaura who was the immediate former Head of
Civil Service and Secretary to the
Cabinet.

President Kibaki has this afternoon accepted decision by Uhuru Kenyatta to step aside as Finance Minister. Uhuru will however stay on as Deputy Prime Minister
without portfolio.

Robinson Njeru Githae takes over at Finance
while Francis Kimemia takes over from Muthaura as Head of Civil Service.
Mutea Iringo will be Acting Permanent Secretary for Provincial
Administration and Internal Security.
