Deschamps calls up
Zouma

Dider Deschamps has called up
Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma to
his France squad for the
friendlies with Albania and
Sweden.
The former Saint-Etienne man
has yet to make his full senior
bow for the national side but
could feature in the forthcoming
fixtures, which take place on
Friday and Tuesday respectively.

Chelsea star Nemanja Matic told
his teammates that they needed
beat rivals Liverpool if they want
to become champions ahead of
their 2-1 victory at Anfield.
The Serbian international has
been an influential figure forthe
Blues since re-joining the club
last summer and has this season
struck up an effective midfield
partnership with Cesc Fabregas.
The midfield duo have started
every game for Jose Mourinho’s
side this season and they once
again played a key role in
another impressive win.

Matic in particular had a big
impact on the outcome, picking
up the Man of the Match award
but also for something he said in
the dressing room pre-match.
Boss Jose Mourinho selected the
former Benfica man to say a few
inspirational words ahead of
kick-off as teammate Cesar
Azpilicueta reveals to the official
Chelsea website.
“He just said if we want to be
champions then we needed to
win the game,” Azpilicueta told
Chelsea.com.
“It’s our target to be champions
and when you go to the
stadiums where it’s really hard
you have to do a very good job.”

Azpilicueta’s journey
from zero to hero
David Lee Wheatley | On 10, Nov
2014
After Sky Sports pundit Gary
Neville named Cesar Azpilicueta
as the Premier League’s best
defender, we track his journey
from unknown zero to Chelsea
hero.
When he arrived at Chelsea
initially as a back-up player for
just £6.5million shortly after his
impressive appearance at the
2012 Olympics, it was perhaps
tough to envisage Cesar
Azpilicueta becoming such an
integral member of the Blues’
team.
He began life in west London
under the leadership of Roberto
Di Matteo before he was
unceremoniously sacked just
three months later and swiftly
replaced by much-maligned boss
Rafa Benitez.
Azpilicueta quickly became a
regular at right-back under
Benitez, though, as his steady
showings eventually earned him
27 league outings and a further
19 in domestic cups and
European competition combined
in a more than solid first season
in England.
However, the Blues set out at the
beginning of the 2013/14
campaign with Jose Mourinho
newly-installed as manager for a
second stint in charge at
Stamford Bridge and Azpilicueta
suddenly found himself in the
cold.
Branislav Ivanovic was preferred
in the Spaniard’s natural position,
while the evergreen Ashley Cole
started out as Mourinho’s first-
choice on the left-hand side.
It wasn’t until October 2013,
when an injury to former Arsenal
star Cole presented Azpilicueta
with an opportunity for a return,
though even then you suspected
Mourinho simply saw the
Spaniard as a convenient stop-
gap option.
Unexpectedly, it soon became
impossible to leave the Spanish
international out of the starting
line-up even when England left-
back Cole made a comeback such
was his impact.
The Pamplona-born competitor’s
barnstorming performances
even led to his claiming of the
Chelsea Players’ Player of the Year
award, as his contribution to the
Premier League’s meanest
defence was enthusiastically
acknowledged by his team-
mates.
Those displays also guaranteed
him a spot in Spain’s 23-man
squad for the World Cup finals in
Brazil where he started two of
three group games, but also
experienced deep
disappointment when the
defending champions crashed
out at the first hurdle.
The former Osasuna and
Marseille defender maintained
top form despite that shock
outcome in South America and
has so far kept new £16million
signing Filipe Luis out of the
picture.
It’s testament to the 25-year-old’s
quality that he’s seen off the
challenge for that left-back slot
from illustrious footballers such
as Ashley Cole – now with Roma
– and highly-rated Brazilian
Felipe Luis, who joined from La
Liga winners Atletico Madrid this
past summer.
Alongside usual back-four team-
mates Branislav Ivanovic, Gary
Cahill and club captain John Terry,
Azpilicueta’s combative versatility
has significantly assisted
Chelsea’s unbeaten rise to the
top of the league in tandem with
the second-best goals against
record in the division.
Crucial interceptions, tireless
running and an ability to play a
simple pass effectively combine
to make Azpilicueta undoubtedly
one of the finest full-backs in the
business at the moment. And, still
in his mid-20s, he can only get

The Data Day:
Liverpool v Chelsea
The statistics suggest that
though Liverpool had plenty of
possession on Saturday, it was
the Blues who were able to
make better use of their time
with the ball…
Of the 27 attempts on goal
shared between the two sides,
14 were blocked before they
could test the keeper. Twelve
of our 15 shots were from
inside the area, in comparison
to five of Liverpool’s 12 efforts
on goal.
Diego Costa and Eden Hazard
each had five shots – no other
player on the pitch had more
than two.
Liverpool had nearly 20%
more possession than us, but
of the 148 more passes they
completed, only nine more
were in the attacking third of
the pitch. Indeed, we had over
10% more territory on
Saturday, which amounts to
time spent in the final third of
the pitch.
Liverpool’s top passer was
Martin Skrtel, while the
Slovakian’s centre-back
partner Dejan Lovren was
next. Their two full-backs, Glen
Johnson and Alberto Moreno,
were also in the top five.
Liverpool’s two most frequent
pass combinations were from
Lovren to Moreno, and from
Skrtel to Johnson.
Our top five passers on
Saturday included Eden
Hazard, Nemanja Matic, Cesc
Fabregas and Oscar. Hazard
completed the most attacking-
third passes in the game,
while Cesar Azpilicueta
recorded six, the same
number as Fabregas.
Matic and Fabregas both made
12 ball recoveries, two more
than the next player – Hazard -
and between them the
midfield duo won seven
tackles, Matic’s four a game-
high figure.
We have now scored five goals
in the opening 15 minutes of
matches this season, the most
in the league.
For only the third time in a
Premier League game this
season we went behind, but
only for five minutes. That
means we have trailed for just
43 minutes of the 990 played
in the league so far (excluding
additional time).
Diego Costa’s goal was his
10 in his first nine top-flight
Chelsea appearances, a record
bettered only by Jack Cock in
1919. George Graham, in
1964, also took nine games to
reach 10 top-flight goals.
The victory extended our
unbeaten start since the start
of the season to 17 games in
all competitions, a new club
record.

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas
has been officially ruled out of
Spain’s upcoming international
matches, the nation’s football
federation has confirmed.
The midfielder played the full 90
minutes of Chelsea’s 2-1 victory
over Liverpool on Saturday but
manager Jose Mourinho revealed
afterwards that the Spaniard had
been playing with a hamstring
injury.
After the match Mourinho was
fairly insistent that Fabregas
would not be able to play for
Spain but after recent arguments
over Diego Costa the Spanish
federation decided to test
Fabregas themselves.
Reports earlier today suggested
that he had been released from
the squad’s training camp to
return to Chelsea’s Cobham
training ground and now Spain
have officially confirmed it.
It is currently unclear whether
the injury will be serious enough
to rule him out of Chelsea’s game
against West Brom whilst
Villarreal’s Bruno has been called
up to replace him.

The Mirror is claiming that Gerard
Pique is set for crunch talks with
the clubs hierarchy.
The 27 year-old has been a bit-
part player for much of the
season, with the inexperienced
Marc Barta played ahead of him,
along with defensive midfielder
Javier Mascherano used at
centre-back also.
The Spaniard is thought to be
keen on a move away from the
club should he fail to be told he
will return to being a key feature
for the Catalan giants in the near
future.
Chelsea and Manchester United
are keen to pave his way back to
the Premier League, with the pair
both willing to offer in excess of
£20 Million for his signature.
The former Red Devil is however
expected to snub his old club, in
favour of reuniting himself with
Cesc Fabregas at Stamford
Bridge. Pique’s girlfriend Shakira
is also thought to be keen on

Andre Schürrle is fighting for his
Chelsea future after a run of bad
form this season.
The tabloid claim the German
World Cup winner could even be
sold in January in order to make
way for new signings.
Schurrle’s form has been
surprisingly off given that he
came into the season as the
assister of the World Cup
winning goal, but then again he
hasn’t been given a fair run of
games by Mourinho to prove his
worth.

sign Benfica starlet Anderson
Talisca, dubbed ‘the new Rivaldo’,
according to reports.
The Blues are reportedly in
pole position to land the young
Brazilian forward, who has been
in scintillating form for the
Portuguese side this season.
Jose Mourinho has praised the
20-year-old in the past and is
keen to make a move for the
forward, but had reservations
due to the difficulties attached to
getting Talisca a work permit.
Reports: Chelsea linked with
Benfica starlet Anderson Talisca
However, he has now been
brought into the Brazil senior
side, making a work permit
application easier for English
clubs – meaning Chelsea would
not have to loan him out after
purchasing him, as was
previously speculated, but could
buy him and field him in the
Premier League straightaway.
Talisca has a reported release
clause of £35 million and has
scored eight goals in nine games.
