Conte on Brighton's penalty appeals: 'In England it's not easy to get a penalty'

Conte commented on penalty appeals after Brighton had two rejected in the first half.
Earlier Brighton boss Chris Hughton claimed his team should have been given two penalties in the defeat to Chelsea.

Conte said on the matter: ‘In England, for a penalty to be whistled is not simple. You can see what happened in the last game against Norwich, it’s the same. In this league there is this type of situation for both teams. I didn’t see these two situations so I can’t give an evaluation.’

4 things you might have missed at Chelsea's win at Brighton

11 hours ago Daily Mail

Hazard makes a young fans' day

After a brilliant display against Brighton, Hazard made a young supporter's day by handing over his match-day shirt.

The fan, who was sat among the home fans, produced a sign which read: 'Hazard 10 - Can I have your shirt?' – the Belgian duly obliged to the youngster's delight.

It was a lovely gesture from Hazard after a match-winning performance against the Seagulls. If you don't ask, you don't get.

Brighton's record signing unveiled

Brighton made a big splash in the January transfer window with the club-record £14.1million signing of Jurgen Locadia from PSV.

The Seagulls were unable to play their new striker after missing the deadline to register him for the Chelsea clash – he is also currently out with a hamstring injury.

But supporters at the Amex were given a glimpse of the Dutchman before kick-off, as he was paraded in front of the home fans.

Chelsea's three Belgians

Charly Musonda's late introduction from the bench meant Chelsea finished the match with an all-Belgian attacking trio, joining Batshuayi and Hazard up top.

The three players were heavily involved in the goals too – Hazard netted twice while both Batshuayi and Musonda provided assists.

One moment captured the team spirit between Chelsea's Belgians brilliantly when Batshuayi opted to lie down and enjoy Hazard's goal during the second half.

Morata trolled on social media

Alvaro Morata's absence through suspension was soon forgotten at the Amex when two goals inside the opening six minutes saw Chelsea march into the lead.

Morata had failed to hit the target in his last six matches for Chelsea before his red card against Norwich in the FA Cup ruled him out against Brighton.

That six-game run included a shambolic display of finishing from the Spaniard in Chelsea's away draw with Arsenal and three goalless draws in the Blues' last three matches.

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy: 'No doubt Eden Hazard better than Philippe Coutinho'

an hour ago insidefutbol.com

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has posed the question of how much Eden Hazard is worth as he sees the Belgian as a level about Philippe Coutinho.
He said on Chelsea TV: "I don't doubt that [Hazard is better than Coutinho].

"If you look at what Coutinho went for, which was somewhere between £120m and £140m, [then how much is Hazard worth?]

"He does things I've never seen any other players do, the way he drops that shoulder", Cundy added.

Why Brighton and Chelsea players were wearing black armbands

3 hours ago The Sun

Premier League players from all 20 clubs are set to wear black armbands during this week's round of fixtures.
English football will come together to remember former West Brom and Coventry legend Cyrille Regis. Regis died on Monday aged 59 after suffering a heart attack, news that shocked football fans and ex-players across the country.

The former England international was regarded as a pioneer for helping to break down racial barriers that had dogged the country in the 1970s and 1980s.

But those close to the player had been left outraged that the Premier League and EFL had not taken steps to remember Regis this weekend. PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor got in touch with Premier League boss Richard Scudamore to ask why nothing had been organised.

The Premier League had been planning to let individual clubs decide for themselves - but they have have now announced all 20 will take part.

A statement read: “The Premier League recognises the important career of Cyrille Regis, and his special role as a trailblazer for black players in modern English football.

4 hours ago Chelsea FC

The boss revealed why Danny Drinkwater was not involved at Chelsea's win over Brighton.
‘Danny Drinkwater had a kick in his ankle in the game against Norwich. He hasn’t been so lucky this season. He has had many problems from the start of the season and I hope he recovers very quickly.’

Chelsea contest Barselona to sign Real Madrid hot prospect

9 hours ago Don Balon

Chelsea and Barcelona are set to go head-to-head to sign Real Madrid youngster Oscar Rodriguez, according to reports in Spain.
Oscar Rodriguez has not been afforded much game time at Real Madrid and is tipped to leave in the summer when his contract expires.

The 19-year-old attacking-midfielder is not lacking in suitors and is reportedly a target for Chelsea and Barcelona.

Spanish outlet Don Balon claim the Blues are keen to sign the teenager and are considering making a January bid in the region of £7million.

Barca, however, are not willing to offer as much but are prepared to give Rodriguez a place in their first team.

Merson claims Abramovic will not spend any money this January on signings

9 hours ago Express

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich believes there is no point spending £50million on a striker this month, claims pundit Paul Merson.
Chelsea have been linked with several shock striker targets in the last few weeks as they look for cover for Alvaro Morata.

West Ham’s Andy Carroll, Crystal Palace’s Christian Benteke and Stoke’s Peter Crouch are three names on the Blues’ shortlist. Roma star Edin Dzeko is the latest name on their radar.

But Merson claims Chelsea will make a stop-gap signing before dipping back into the transfer market in the summer.

“It’s not good is it at the moment when you reel off all them (names),” the Chelsea fan and former Arsenal forward said on Sky Sports.

“I just think the owner’s looked at it and thought ‘we’re quite a way away from Man City, what’s the point?’.

“There isn’t too many silly multi, multi-millionaires around the world; you’ve got to be clever. He’s a clever man and he’s probably weighed it up.

“He’s been in football a long time and he thinks ‘right, if I spend £50million for another centre-forward, how close is that going to bring me to Man City? We’re not going to win the league’.

“I think they’re just trying to get through this season, hopefully get in the top four which I think is going to be very difficult at the moment, and then reassess where they go after that.

“January is not a good time and I think they’re just sorting out a stop-gap at the moment with the names that are coming around.

“I think if they get one of those in then I think Batshuayi will go, even if he gets a hat-trick today.”

6 reasons why Chelsea fans will always love Branislav Ivanovic

8 hours ago FourFourTwo

On January 16, 2008, Chelsea signed Branislav Ivanovic from Lokomotiv Moscow. It worked out rather well.
His nine-year spell at Stamford Bridge had everything, from scoring the winning goal in a European cup final to being bitten by Luis Suarez. Going from being an outside choice at centre-back to cementing his place as one of the greatest right-backs of the Premier League era, Ivanovic was a joy to watch in England’s top flight. We love him, Chelsea fans love him, and here’s why.

A trophy a year

In nine years at Stamford Bridge, Ivanovic won nine major honours (and a Community Shield). And he certainly played his part in the success – he was twice named in the Premier League team of the season, once in the Champions League equivalent, and also earned the man of the match award after scoring the winner in the 2013 Europa League final.

He’s one of those

You know those players, who whenever your team plays against them you absolutely hate, but if they’re playing for your team then you absolutely love. Ivanovic loves a tackle and knows how to play a little bit dirty when the referee’s head is turned, and we can’t help but admire that.

Knows how to score a goal

Some defenders just seem to have that knack for being in the right place at the right time, and Ivanovic knows how to finish a chance as well. He scored 34 goals in all competitions during his time at Chelsea, though none of them were as good as this recent effort in the Europa League.

Two-goal Ivanovic

That’s right, he even earned a nickname because of his goalscoring. His brace in the Champions League quarter final against Liverpool, while still hovering around the fringes of the first team, immediately gave him a firm spot in Chelsea fans’ hearts.

And he absolutely loves it when he does score

One thing you certainly can’t deny is his immense passion, and that’s best typified whenever he’s thumped one into the back of the net.

Accidentally became a brilliant right-back

Ivanovic is heralded as one of the greatest right-backs of recent Premier League years, but he was signed as a central defender. Only when first team opportunities were hard to come by and right-back Jose Bosingwa got injured was he asked to fill in, and boy did he do that well.

Batshuayi top target for Dortmund

2 hours ago Gianluca Di Marzio

Strikers are a hot topic this month
A deal between Borussia Dortmund and Sampdoria for Duvan Zapata has stalled, and as a result, Dortmund is now looking closely at Chelsea's Michy Batshuayi.

The Germans are reportedly ready to sell their unsettled star Aubameyang to Arsenal and so they need a replacement this month already.

The Blues' Belgian forward is the piece that could unlock Chelsea's deal with Roma to bring Edin Dzeko and Emerson Palmieri to Stamford Bridge, but Dortmund are holding up on their pursuit of Zapata while exploring the possibility to land Batshuayi instead.

Lampard calls for squad shake-up

11 minutes ago Express

No sooner than in the summer though
Frankie: ''Something doesn’t feel quite right. I don’t know whether it’s the club as a whole or whether the manager is upset.

''Obviously he [Conte] wanted different recruitment in the summer, that was very evident, and I think things have boiled over from that.

''With Manchester City being so dominant, Chelsea are not in a position to win the league now, so I think it’s a time to regroup in the summer.''
