Wapinzani hawajalala isipokuwa kuna wapinzani hewa, usitegemee hawa watakuja unganisha nguvu zao hata siku moja.

Na CCJ wakiingia kwa mlango wa nyuma tutawapiga kwa mawe hadi wafe. Tunataka wazalendo wa kweli.

Academics: New party here to divert attention

The Chairman of the University of Dar es Salaam Academic Staff Association (Udasa) Dr Benson Bana who said experience had shown that , no influential politician can survive politically outside the ruling party.Prominent lecturers react to reports that several CCM bigwigs are preparing to defect to the newly formed CCJ, and that they are using obscure frontmen to hide their real intentions

Prominent academicians have described the emergence of a new political party, the Chama Cha Jamii (CCJ), as a carefully orchestrated move to divert attention from important national issues.

Speaking to The Citizen yesterday, academicians from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) said CCJ would not have a significant impact in the forthcoming General Election as widely expected.

They noted that all prominent CCM members associated with CCJ had since distanced themselves from the party, adding that this was proof that there were no influential politicians behind the outfit as rumoured.

They were reacting to reports that several CCM bigwigs were preparing to defect to the new party, and that were using obscure frontmen to hide their real intentions.

"Judging from what we have seen and heard, I don't think the new party can pose a serious threat to other parties, let alone CCM. We have seen its constitution it's exciting, but there are no big politicians to front this exciting constitution," said Dr Azaveli Lwaitama.

He said apart from the constitution, which gives one an idea of a party's ideology and what it stands for, individuals within parties also mattered in Tanzanian politics.

"When they say that there are bigwigs behind this party, we want to know who they are before assessing the seriousness and strength of the party on the political arena," Dr Lwaitama said.

He added that the party, which has applied for registration, was still an "insignificant outfit" because no political powerhouse appeared to be ready to be associated with it.

Dr Lwaitama said the surfacing of CCJ at this particular time could be a ploy to divert Tanzanians' attention from important issues such as the political developments in Zanzibar and the war on grand corruption.

He wondered how CCJ could be a threat to CCM or any other political party if all those said to be behind the new party were distancing themselves from the group.

A number of CCM MPs and former senior government officials have been associated with the new party, whose provisional leaders have been identified as Mr Richard Kiyabo (chairman) and Mr Renatus Mubhi (secretary-general).

MPs linked with the party include those who have been vocal about grand corruption.

Parliamentarians who have denied having any connection with CCJ include Mr Fred Mpendazoe (Kishapu-CCM), who has also dismissed suggestions that he is related to the party's provisional secretary-general.

Other CCM MPs who have distanced themselves from CCJ include Mr John Shibuda (Maswa), Mr Anthony Diallo (Ilemela) and Dr Harrison Mwakyembe (Kyela).

A former Prime Minister, who is said to be among the party's founders, was yesterday quoted as denying having anything to do with CCJ, and accused a prominent businessman of orchestrating a campaign to tarnish his name.

Dr Lwaitama said the public denials meant that CCJ was not the force it was portrayed to be.

"Now, if these people who are said to be behind the party's formation have all denied having anything to do with CCJ, are there any other influential people who can make impact if they decide to defect (from CCM)?" he asked.

He said it was not unusual for governments, individuals or institutions to sponsor political parties in a bid to divert attention from pressing issues, adding that this could be happening in Tanzania.

Dr Benson Bana of the UDSM Political Science Department said experience had shown that "no influential politician can survive politically outside the ruling party".

"I don't think there is any serious politician worth his salt who is seriously thinking about defecting from CCM at this point... this is just a plot to divert our attention from serious issues," he said.

He said what people should be seeking to establish was who was behind the "plot" to divert Tanzanians' attention from the "real issues" and why the move had been made now.

Dr Bana, who is also the chairman of the University of Dar es Salaam Academic Staff Association (Udasa), said any politician thinking about defecting from the ruling party "had better think twice".

"Experience shows that it is very difficult for those who defect from CCM to thrive politically outside the party. If there are any serious people behind this party they should know that their timing is bad, and they are not going to make it."

Both academicians said there was no way the rumoured politicians were going to make any headway by hiding behind other people.

Opposition MP Willibrod Slaa echoed similar sentiments, saying a politician could not expect to attain his or her goals by "hiding".

There were also fears that the new party might not be able to fulfil registration requirements in time to enable it to field candidates during the October elections.

CCM secretary-general Yusuf Makamba has said the ruling party had nothing to fear from CCJ.

He was quoted yesterday as saying that CCM had over 4 million members, and would not be destabilised even if some of its most influential members defected.

"You are popular while you are in CCM. As soon as you quit, you become nothing," said Mr Makamba, who said there were "living" examples of politicians whose popularity and appeal faded after they left the ruling party.

Some of the prominent CCM leaders who have been linked with CCJ said they were not even aware of the formation of the new party when contacted for comment yesterday.
