Later pseudo-scientific theories would be built around African skull shapes, dental structure, and body postures, in an attempt to find an unassailable argument--rooted in whatever the most persuasive contemporary idiom happened to be: law, theology, genealogy, or natural science -- why one part of the human race should live in perpetual indebtedness to another." 1

By today's secular and religious standards:
bullet slavery is immoral.
bullet cursing all of an individual's descendents into perpetual slavery because of an inappropriate act by an ancestor is immoral.
bullet laying a curse on the son of the person who committed the act is immoral.

But in ancient times, cursing a whole race into slavery was considered acceptable because it was in the Bible. The American slave owner felt that he was carrying out God's plan by buying and using slaves.

Katika nchi nyingi za ulaya kukana kuwa palikuwa na Holocaust ni kosa la jinai. Wamefanya hivi kutokana kuwa na hofu ya kwamba kwa kukana ukweli huu kutaruhusu kupenyezwa tena imani na vitendo vya kibaguzi dhidi ya wayahudi. Hii ikiruhusiwa itapelekea kurudia hali iliyotawala katika miaka ya 30 ambapo jumuia ya kijerumani iliona ni haki kumdhalilisha, kumgandamiza na hatimaye kumuua myahudi. Hii hali wasingetaka irudiwe ndiyo maana wanakuwa wakali kuhusu mtu yeyote anayejaribu kuandika upya historia kufuta vitendo vya kikatili vilivyofanywa dhidi ya wayahudi na wale wengine waliioonekana hawana nafasi katika jamii ya kijerumani.

Afrika ya magharibi biashara ilimilikiwa na mataifa ya Ulaya na yale ya kaskazini mwa Afrika. Wazungu waliwasafirisha watu weusi kupitia bahari ya Atlantiki na wale wa Afrika ya Kaskazini kuvuka jangwa la sahara. Hapa kwetu biashara ilimilikiwa na waarabu kutoka Oman ambao baada ya muda walifungua soko kubwa la watumwa unguja ambapo watu weusi waliosafirishwa kupitia bandari za Bagamoyo, Mikindani, Kilwa n.k. walipigwa mnada.

Moja ya vitu walivyovifanya waingereza walipoingia Zanziba ni kumlazimisha Sultan kusimamisha hiyo haramu. Pale palipokuwa na soko la watumwa pakajengwa kanisa na pale palipokuwa na mlingoti wa kuwauzia hao watumwa pakawa ndiyo altare ya kanisa.

Inakuwaje leo hii, mtanzania (Befair) anaweza kuamka na kudai kuwa biashara ya utumwa unguja iliendeshwa ndani ya makanisa kama alivyoandika mwandishi hapo juu kwenye sehemu ya Dini/Imani? Inakuwaje, mtanzania mwingine (Zomba) anakuja anatetea uwongo huo?

Sasa kwa nini nimeileta hapa? Hapa kinachonitatiza si suala la dini, ni hilo la historia yangu. historia ya wale walionitangulia, waliokamatwa, kubebeshwa mizigo na hatimaye kuuzwa kama punda na hao waliojiona kuwa ni waungwana. Hii inahusiana nini na utumwa nchini kwetu? Unataka kusema wamarekani walichukua watumwa hapa kwetu kwa sababu aya hii ndivyo ilivyowaelekeza? Au maana yako ni kuwa utumwa pale kwetu uliletwa na wazungu ambao waliongozwa na aya hii? Na baada ya kuona ukatili huu ndio waarabu kutoka Oman wakaja kutuondoa utumwani wakiongozwa na Qur'an tukufu? Au una maana nyingine?

3)The church's admission follows similar apologies by the late Pope John Paul II for the historic transgressions of the Roman Catholic church, its anti-semitism and the Inquisition.

Speakers in the synod debate acknowledged that the church had played its part in justifying slavery during the long campaign by William Wilberforce and others such as the former slave ship captain turned minister John Newton, composer of the hymn Amazing Grace, to secure its abolition. Wilberforce brought bills before parliament for 20 successive years until legislation to abolish the trade was passed.

Wakatoliki wana mabenki, mashamba na kadhalika. Waanglikana nao wana investments kama hizo. Hizo biashara zinatawaliwa na kanisa. Wakati wa utumwa, hii ilikuwa biashara inayolipa sana na kanisa lilihusika kama wafanyabiashara wengine. Kanisa lilitumia watumwa katika mashamba yake na lilipinga sana hii biashara kufutwa kwa sababu ingeathiri investments zake. Lakini ulifika wakati kanisa likakubali kujitoa katika biashara hiyo na kwa kiasi kikubwa likaongoza vita dhidi ya hii biashara. Hayo makosa ndiyo viongozi wa kanisa Anglikana wanakiri. Si kwamba waliuzia watumwa kanisan, bali waliwekeza kwenye hiyo biashara na walinufaika nayo.

Uislamu hauna mfumo kama huo. Kila msikiti ni kivyake. Hamna institutions kama zilivyo Church of England na the Roman Catholic Church. Ndiyo maana hatuzungumzii msikiti kwa namna hiyo. Ila waislamu walishiriki kwenye hii biashara. Ila kwa sababu waislamu hakuna institutions kama zilivyo kwenye ukristu, hii biashara iliendeshwa na watu binafsi ikijumuisha na watawala ambao waliamini kuwa Qur'an inaruhusi hivyo. Kwa mfano ujumbe wa masheikh kutoka Qatar walioenda kuhudhuria kusimikwa kwa Malkia Elizabeth wapili waliongozana na watumwa wao. Miaka mitano baadaye waliongozana tena na watumwa kutembelea uingereza.
Aya zinazotumika katika Qur'an kutetea hoja ya kuwa utumwa ni sehemu ya uislamu ni kama hii ifuatayo:


33:50 - "Prophet, We have made lawful to you the wives to whom you have granted dowries and the slave girls whom God has given you as booty."

Al Fawzan – a member of the Senior Council of Clerics, Saudi Arabia's highest religious body – says Muslims who contend Islam is against slavery "are ignorant, not scholars."

"They are merely writers," he said, according to SIA. "Whoever says such things is an infidel."

Al-Fawzan's best-known textbook, "Al-Tawheed – Monotheism," says most Muslims are polytheists, and their blood and money are therefore free for the taking by "true Muslims."

SIA said although the Saudi government claims religious curriculum is being reformed, Al-Fawzan's books are still in wide use.

Al-Fawzan is a member of the Council of Religious Edicts and Research, the Imam of Prince Mitaeb Mosque in Riyadh and a professor at Imam Mohamed Bin Saud Islamic University, Saudi Arabia's main center of learning for the strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islam.

SIA noted Al-Fawzan, a leading opponent of curriculum reform, opposes elections and demonstrations as Western influences, is against Arab women marrying non- Arab Muslims and has issued a fatwa forbidding the watching of television.

Al-Fawzan has threatened to behead a Saudi writer and scholar, Sheik Hassan Al-Maliki, for his criticism of Wahhabism, according to SIA. Al-Maliki was fired from his position with the ministry of education after writing a 50- page paper criticizing Al-Fawzan's book "Al-Tawheed."

Badala ya kuwa biashara sindikizaji ikawa ndio main trade. Hii hasa ilitokea pale ambapo mataifa ya magharibi yalipopiga marufuku biashara hii. Wale wenye mashamba kwenye visiwa vya bahari Hindi (Mauritius, madagascar n.k) walikuwa wanakuja Zanziba kununua watumwa. Soko la Zanziba likaja kuwa ndiyo soko kubwa la wazi la watumwa Afrika nzima pengine duniani. Katika kujaribu kuzuia biashara hii, marekani na uingereza wakaanzisha ubalozi Zanziba na hatimaye waliweza kumshinikiza Sultan Sayyid Barghash kupiga marufuku BIASHARA ya utumwa ingawa utumwa uliendelea kuweko maana watu waliruhusiwa kuwa na watumwa. Uwongo Huo! nakukaribisha msikitini au kama hutaki kwenda na mimi, ingia msikiti wowote , halafu nenda mstari wa mbele uone kama hutosali, kumbuka kutawadha kabla hujaingia msikitini na usisahau kuvuwa viatu kabla ya kuingia.

Toka mwanzo nimekuambia pengine umesoma lakini haujaelimika. Umeambiwa kuwa hauwezi kureserve kiti msikitini kwa sababu hamtumii viti humo. Sasa unataka kureserve nafasi ya kwenye jamvi?

Unachanganya ukristu na kanisa.Tunapozungumzia kanisa hatuzumzii jengo tu, tunazungumzia mfumo mzima wa uendeshaji na uongozi. Ndiyo maana kanisa lilifanya biashara. Wakatoliki wana mabenki, mashamba na kadhalika. Waanglikana nao wana investments kama hizo. Hizo biashara zinatawaliwa na kanisa. Wakati wa utumwa, hii ilikuwa biashara inayolipa sana na kanisa lilihusika kama wafanyabiashara wengine. Kanisa lilitumia watumwa katika mashamba yake na lilipinga sana hii biashara kufutwa kwa sababu ingeathiri investments zake. Lakini ulifika wakati kanisa likakubali kujitoa katika biashara hiyo na kwa kiasi kikubwa likaongoza vita dhidi ya hii biashara. Hayo makosa ndiyo viongozi wa kanisa Anglikana wanakiri. Si kwamba waliuzia watumwa kanisan, bali waliwekeza kwenye hiyo biashara na walinufaika nayo.

Uislamu hauna mfumo kama huo. Kila msikiti ni kivyake. Hamna institutions kama zilivyo Church of England na the Roman Catholic Church. Ndiyo maana hatuzungumzii msikiti kwa namna hiyo. Ila waislamu walishiriki kwenye hii biashara. Ila kwa sababu waislamu hakuna institutions kama zilivyo kwenye ukristu, hii biashara iliendeshwa na watu binafsi ikijumuisha na watawala ambao waliamini kuwa Qur'an inaruhusi hivyo. Kwa mfano ujumbe wa masheikh kutoka Qatar walioenda kuhudhuria kusimikwa kwa Malkia Elizabeth wapili waliongozana na watumwa wao. Miaka mitano baadaye waliongozana tena na watumwa kutembelea uingereza.
Aya zinazotumika katika Qur'an kutetea hoja ya kuwa utumwa ni sehemu ya uislamu ni kama hii ifuatayo:


33:50 - "Prophet, We have made lawful to you the wives to whom you have granted dowries and the slave girls whom God has given you as booty."

zilitumika kutetea kuwa mwenyezi Mungu amewapa haki waislamu kuwa na watumwa. Mwaka 2003, sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan alisema wazi kuwa utumwa ni sehemu ya dini ya kiisalamu. Quote yake hiyo hapo chini:
A leading Saudi government cleric and author of the country's religious curriculum believes Islam advocates slavery.
"Slavery is a part of Islam," says Sheik Saleh Al-Fawzan, according to the independent Saudi Information Agency, or SIA.

In a lecture recorded on tape by SIA, the sheik said, "Slavery is part of jihad, and jihad will remain as long there is Islam."

His religious books are used to teach 5 million Saudi students, both within the country and abroad, including the United States.

Al Fawzan – a member of the Senior Council of Clerics, Saudi Arabia's highest religious body – says Muslims who contend Islam is against slavery "are ignorant, not scholars."

"They are merely writers," he said, according to SIA. "Whoever says such things is an infidel."

Al-Fawzan's best-known textbook, "Al-Tawheed – Monotheism," says most Muslims are polytheists, and their blood and money are therefore free for the taking by "true Muslims."

SIA said although the Saudi government claims religious curriculum is being reformed, Al-Fawzan's books are still in wide use.

Al-Fawzan is a member of the Council of Religious Edicts and Research, the Imam of Prince Mitaeb Mosque in Riyadh and a professor at Imam Mohamed Bin Saud Islamic University, Saudi Arabia's main center of learning for the strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islam.

SIA noted Al-Fawzan, a leading opponent of curriculum reform, opposes elections and demonstrations as Western influences, is against Arab women marrying non- Arab Muslims and has issued a fatwa forbidding the watching of television.

Al-Fawzan has threatened to behead a Saudi writer and scholar, Sheik Hassan Al-Maliki, for his criticism of Wahhabism, according to SIA. Al-Maliki was fired from his position with the ministry of education after writing a 50- page paper criticizing Al-Fawzan's book "Al-Tawheed."

Ibn Sa'd's "Tabaqat", gives a clear description of Muhammad having "relations" with at least one of his slave girls. Muhammad had sexual relations with Mariyah, his Coptic slave. Mariyah and her sister, Sirin were slaves given as gifts to Muhammad. Muhammad gave Sirin to Hasan Thabit, the poet. Ibn Sa'd says that Muhammad "liked Mariyah, who was of white complexion, with curly hair and pretty." [Taken from Ibn Sa'd's "Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir" (Book of the Major Classes), p151].

Badala ya kuwa biashara sindikizaji ikawa ndio main trade. Hii hasa ilitokea pale ambapo mataifa ya magharibi yalipopiga marufuku biashara hii. Wale wenye mashamba kwenye visiwa vya bahari Hindi (Mauritius, madagascar n.k) walikuwa wanakuja Zanziba kununua watumwa. Soko la Zanziba likaja kuwa ndiyo soko kubwa la wazi la watumwa Afrika nzima pengine duniani. Watumwa hawa waliendelea kuweko mpaka mwisho wa utawala wa wajerumani.

Mimi nawashangaa sana. Nilidhani nyie ni wasomi na mna uwezo wa kutafakari na kuchambua mambo. Mmekalia udini tu. Dini fulani ni mbaya, dini fulani ni nzuri. Utumwa kama uliletwa na Waarabu au Wazungu si yameshapita? Unataka tuwarudishie hao Wazungu na Waarabu tuwatie utumwani?

Mama Mkwe. tofauti kubwa ya wayahudi na sisi waafrika ni jinsi tunavyochukua historia. Ingawa holocaust ilitokea miaka 60 iliyopita wayahudi hawachoki na hawasiti kuikumbusha dunia kuwa ilitokea na wao kama jamii walifanyiwa maovu wakati dunia ikiangalia. Sisi waafrika ambao tulifanyiwa maovu kupindukia na karibu jamii zote hapa duniani tunakuaje wepesi kusema kuwa yaliyopita si ndwele? Matokeo yake ndiyo hizi juhudi za wahusika kujaribu kuandika upya historia kujikosha na hatimae kusema ilikuwa kwa faidi yetu. Kuna watu marekani wameishasema kuwa wamarekani weusi inabidi wawashukuru wale waliowatoa Afrika ukiangalia msoto uliotanda Afrika. Vijana wangapi ambao hawakuujua ukoloni wanaodai kuwa aheri kuwa mbwa wa kizungu kuliko kubaki Afrika. Haya ndio matokeo ya kusahau historia na kuruhusu wenye nia mbaya waiandike upya. Mimi ninachopinga ni huku kuandika upya historia. Sijali alihusika nani. Sitaki hata thumuni yao lakini wasininyang'anye utu wangu kwa kunitukana kwa kukana kuhusika kwao. Tugange kweli lakini tusisahau tulikotoka. Mimi ni mtu mweusi na wote hao, wazungu na waarabu waliacha makovu ya viboko vyao kwenye mgongo wangu.
 
Na baada ya hapo waanglikana kwa kupinga kwao utumwa wakaamuwa kujenga kanisa kwenye jela la watumwa, walitaka iwe ukumbusho kwa vizazi vijavyo, ndio wakaamuwa kujenga kanisa kwenye hiyo jela ya watumwa.

Sasa ulitaka wajenge wapi? Kwanza sio jela bali ni sehemu walipokuwa wakiwekwa watumwa kabla ya kupigwa mnada. Jela ni mahali pa kuadhibu mkosaji. Ulitaka wabakize picha tuu ambazo ungekuja kusema wali'photoshop'. Nenda bagamoyo na makumbusho iliyokuwa inakumbukumbu nyingi za utumwa iko kanisani.
