Empires of the Monsoon by Richard Hall

I don't know if I can call it a novel but I think its a must read for those who wants to know our history in different perspective.

Review
'Empires of the Monsoon is a panoramic study of the history of the Indian Ocean and the destruction of its traditional trade by colonial Europe... Its major achievement is to weave into a coherent whole the histories of a kaleidoscope of civilisations and peoples... Empires of the Monsoon reads like some mediaeval Book of Wonders, rich with exotic improbabilities.... It is all gripping stuff, dizzily ambitious in its scope and full of some of the oddest facts imaginable.' William Dalrymple, Independent 'Empires of the Monsoon is an example of popular history at its best... It is the story of many marvels and many great adventures.' J.D.F. Jones, Financial Times 'A panoramic account of the Indian Ocean and its invaders... combining scholarly zeal with a good journalist's flair for selection and narrative. The book is full of fascinating information.' John Grigg, Sunday Telegraph 'Hall's lively compendium is rich in bloodthirsty sultans, swashbuckling pirates, hypocritical imperialists and serendipitous Sinbads... He is an enthusiastic storyteller who can hold you with his glittering eye.' Felipe Fernandez-Armesto, Sunday Times 'A vast and fascinating history... I found it both absorbing and instructive.' Robert Carver, Scotsman

Product Description

Until Vasco da Gama discovered the sea-route to the East in 1497-9 almost nothing was known in the West of the exotic cultures and wealth of the Indian Ocean and its peoples. It is this civilization and its destruction at the hands of the West that Richard Hall recreates in this book. Hall's history of the exploration and exploitation by Chinese and Arab travellers, and by the Portuguese, Dutch and British alike is one of brutality, betrayal and colonial ambition.

Talking about the late Sheldon, "Tell me your dreams" was also a master piece! you can also try any John Grisham, you will never go wrong.

hahahaaaaa,naikumbuka..

Back to the books, I had a feeling kuwa most of vitabu vya Elvis Musiba (na character wake Willy Gamba) were a bit like swahili versions of James Hadley Chase (ingawa sikumbuki hata title zake manake navyo vilikuwa vingi mno, anyways this is where I learned to read the novels plus the Mills and Boons)

...Understood. back to the books.

The alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The God Father by Mario Puzo..Good novels I guess

mmenikuna. naona mtachukulia utani. nina novel (riwaya) yangu nimetunga na kuandika. ipo hapo UDSM-TUKI inaitwa adha ya heri. mnaonaje mkipata nakala moja moja? wachambuzi wamesema ni kitu ambacho hakistahili kuwekwa kapuni. Just go there and pick one ni sh. 4500/= tu.

You are right BabaDesi, Denise Robbins naye nimemsoma. Tatizo langu moja nikaja kuangukia zaidi kwenye vitabu vyenye umafia zaidi if not utemi, novel yoyote ikishaanza kupiga makele ya CIA, KGB and the like, haichelewi kuniweka macho robo tatu ya usiku! Nikasoma some of John Grisham, wakishaingia mahakamani nasinzia. Kwa hiyo most of the 'Mills and Boon', Denise Robbins......ambavyo at the end '.....they lived happily thereafter' zinanichoooosha.... Though if I don't have something to read, huwa navitafuta tu nisome..

kweli ummemsoma ma Mkubwa Denise! Karibuni Riwaya zake zoote hazina tofauti sana na tamthiliya tunazoonyeshwa sasa kwenye vituo vyetu vya Tiivii. Mikasa miingi huwapata Wahusika wakuu lakini unaweza kutabiri kabisa kuwa at the end of the day (the Book!)...they will live happily ever after!

Hayo mambo ya KGB na CIA unaweza pia kuyapata zaidi kwa muandishi John Le Carre kwenye riwaya zake za 'The Spy who came in from the cold' na 'Tinker, Tailor, Solder, Spy'. You might also check out Collin Forbes's Spy thriller 'Avalanche Express' which is among my all time favorites.
