This is the old wakulima market near the city center and it's due for demolition. The new market being posted here is located on Kangudo road, about 20 kilometers from the cbd. Get your facts rightso thats bigger than a football stadium!
Wakulima Market
Location
Wakulima Market, located in Muthurwa along Haile Selassie Avenue is Nairobi’s largest fresh produce market.The market is set to be relocated to Eastlands on a 45 acre piece of land near the junction of Kangundo road and Outer Ring Road. Construction will be finished by the end of December 2014.
History of Wakulima Market
The market which was built in 1966 has a holding capacity of 300 traders. It currently accommodates about 7000 dealers. It is the oldest and best known fresh produce market. The market was closed in 2005 for thorough cleaning, the first in 30 years. The market is closed for cleaning at 1 pm Monday to Saturdays and 12 noon on Sunday.
Division of the Market
The market has two gates, though past opening hours, exit is only though one gate. The vendors are both under the shelter and in open air. There are different sections for vegetables, fruits, cereals and other products.
Ownership of Wakulima Market
The market is owned and governed by Nairobi City County.
Products sold in Wakulima Market
The market feeds more than 50 per cent of Nairobi’sresidents.
