Help is a noun yes. But it is an uncountable noun which means you cannot put an article "a" before or after it because that's grammatically wrong. In grammar rules, articles are not put before or after uncountable nouns. It's not a question of bragging or anything close to that. A footbridge plays an important role in saving lives on busy roads.
