The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) sought approvals to begin work on a new Sh28 billion facility that could well become the largest hospital in Africa once complete.
Regulatory filings indicate that the facility is to be built on a 200-acre piece of land in Kiplombe on the outskirts of Eldoret town.

Currently, MTRH has a 1,000-bed facility on Nandi Road in Eldoret complete with various specialists.
The proposed new hospital would have a bed capacity of 4,000.
The continent's largest hospital, South Africa's Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital has 3,400 beds.

The beds in the new facility will be housed in six multi-story buildings along with 36 nursing units.
A three-floor complex will accommodate a paediatric clinic and 22 general out-patient clinics.
The plan will also see a five-floor medical technology block put up.
New staff apartments and an administration block are also to be constructed.
The project was to be announced last year but protracted battles between the state and squatters living in Kiplombe held back its launch.
Kenya's current largest hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, has a bed capacity of 1,800.
