in 1901 a german engineer by the name Stiegler wanted to build a bridge & a dam at a narrow canyon along the Rufiji River, during his expedition he was knocked by an elephant and he fell to his death down into the deep, rocky ravine.

The canyon was later named "Stiegler's Gorge" in honor of the engineer
