Most working class don't like public transport. ....."keeping up with the jonesses mentality " ....

I honestly think it is stupidity to some level but not entirely their fault.. If the govt introduced safe and reliable public transport it would be a different situation. Sonko intends to introduce caparks along the major roads to encourage park and ride.kind of thing, I hope it will work.
