Arsene Wenger says that Granit Xhaka is neither a defensive midfielder or a box to box player, but more a deep-lying playmaker.

“Granit is more a deep playmaker I think than a box-to-box player,” he said. “He does not get in the final third of the opposition half a lot. He is more a guy who has a fantastic pass to play through the lines.

“He gets the ball from the defenders and finds the high midfield. His strength is what we call the ‘moderate-value pass’ – the passes that come from deep midfield to high midfield.”

Ni aina ya viungo ambao wakati wa mchezo wao huwa karibu zaidi na mabeki na kuichezesha timu kutokea eneo hilo la chini uwanjani. Viungo hawa huwa ni wazuri katika umiliki wa mpira, huwa na uwezo mkubwa wa kutambua na kufumbua mbinu za mpinzani, lakini huwa na uwezo mkubwa wa kupiga pasi za aina zote(ndefu na fupi). Jukumu la msingi(primary duty/role) ya kiungo huyu ni kuamua timu icheze katika mwenendo gani kutokea chini(kutoka kwa mabeki) anatakiwa kupiga pasi za akili either ni fupi,ndefu au pasi mpenyezo ambazo zitatoboa/pita katika kiungo na mabeki wa timu pinzani. my biggest concern honestly is our defence. I know that sounds odd, but hear me out.
It’s my opinion that all successful defences have 3 types of defenders. Firstly, the full backs. They must be able to defend to a reasonable standard, be almost obsessed with stopping crosses and be able to affect attacks on the flanks. Secondly is the number 5 central defender. The number 5 is the ball playing centre half that can play, is generally the quicker of the central players and likes to bring the play forward from the back. And finally the rock, the player who lives and breathes to stop he opponents at all costs. Often being the captain or leader of the defensive unit. This player puts every ounce of energy into organising players around him and destroying the top notch forwards.

Now we have a collection of very good to decent full backs/wing backs and we have a group of passable to excellent number 5’s….. but at present, I don’t see one number 6.
City in both Laporte and Diaz have number 6’s and Liverpool has van djyk and Man Utd have Maguire ( sorry, Maguire still hasn’t worked out he’s a number 5 yet, he believes he’s a leader )
And I can’t remember a major team without that set up.
Now I know the game is evolving, and I know everyone needs to be able to play more like a 5 but we still need a rock. I’m hoping saliba can be that player but I see him as a 5. White and Gabrielle are excellent 5’s. I just worry that it’s a “when the shit hits the fan” moment comes along, we don’t have as yet that player who holds it all together. Maybe ramsdale is able to do it…. But you expect the gk to talk to the number 6 and control things as a unit, in conjunction with the number 4 or holding midfielder (partey). It’s the spine of the team.
