Mikel Arteta explains Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka’s new position
Mikel Arteta has explained the reasoning behind Granit Xhaka’s shift to a more advanced midfield role for
Arsenal in recent games.
Having typically played in a deeper position in the centre of the park for the Gunners under Arteta, Xhaka has been tasked with playing as more of a No.8 of late.
The Switzerland international has found himself much more advanced than
Thomas Partey and occupying spaces in between the opposition defence and midfield.
When quizzed on Xhaka’s new role during a press conference on Friday, Arteta said: ‘Sometimes you have to take players out of their comfort zone and open a different door to explore how the team will react to it and what the opposition will do when you do certain things.
‘Then it’s more unpredictable because if not, it’s pretty easy to prepare the same thing against the same opposition.’
The tactics Arteta has employed in recent weeks have worked, with the north London side winning each of their last four league games.
Their fine form has seen them climb up to fourth in the Premier League table, with three games still in hand over fifth-placed Manchester United
Arsenal take on Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday in another crunch game, but Arteta is only focused on the match and not the race for the top four.
‘The only matter for me is how we train tomorrow and how we play on Sunday,’ Arteta added.
‘The rest, this is football and its so unpredictable: nobody knows what can happen. Our only focus is on performing and winning matches.’
