MSIKIKIZENI PER KUHUSU TIMU YETU

Per Mertesacker shifts forward in his seat. “Everybody says it: ‘The Arsenal Way’… but what does it actually mean?”

There is a mischievous glint in the German’s eye. “Is it offensive, passing football? Everybody does that!” he scoffs. “We need more. We need a framework — one that gives kids a freedom to play, but that also has certain kinds of measurements so we can say, ‘This is how we’re going to play, this is Arsenal, this is world class.’”

With each of those last three statements, the former Arsenal captain bangs a fist on the table for emphasis. The gentle giant is stirring.

“I’ve presented it to Edu,” Mertesacker reveals to The Athletic. The Brazilian was appointed as Arsenal’s first ever technical director back in July, and has since sat down with Mertesacker to sketch out the blueprint for the ideal Arsenal player. “Just to give you a brief idea: we want to dominate possession but we want to win it back as soon as...

KWANINI PER KAENDA MOJA KWA MOJA KWA BWANA EDU?(DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL)

Director of football' ni nani?

Hopefully Edu, Per and Freddie get together and recommend to Josh the all important change that needs to be made.

The positive is that Bellerin, Holding, and Tierney will probably start against Bournemouth and Laca will come back.

Nicolas Pepe has played seven league games. He has impressed against Tottenham and given Virgil van Dijk all sorts of problems. So why the panic?

Upo sahihi mkuu

Why it’s far too early to panic about Pepe

So here we are, seven games into his Arsenal career, and questions are already being asked about Pepe. How he and his new club must long for the days when Robert Pires was given six months before anyone made a serious assessment over him. He has scarcely got six games.

Already Roy Keane is “slamming” Pepe, making the easy comparison between Bukayo Saka and the new signing’s £72million transfer fee and questioning “his work rate, his lack of quality, end product, his body language.” Such are the requirements of punditry - no-one employs the former Manchester United skipper because he has a reputation of giving footballers the benefit of the doubt - but a few weeks to settle in does not feel like too much to ask for.

This was not Pepe’s finest hour in an Arsenal shirt. The club record signing was not trusted to finish the game after a plodding game in which he was dispossessed more often than he managed to successfully complete a dribble, where he conceded possession more than any player on the pitch and where his shots and crosses caused greater danger for the Stretford End than David de Gea’s goal.

All these things are true but it is also the case that he gave Virgil van Dijk a greater scare at Anfield than almost any forward in the Premier League, that he flourished against Tottenham Hotspur and that he is still adapting to life in a new country.

On the flip side he is still waiting for his first goal from open play and the penalty Aubameyang handed him in the win over Aston Villa didn’t seem to be doing much for his confidence on Monday evening. Yet a measure of patience with Pepe will have its rewards, not least because we are yet to see him command the right with a truly dangerous full-back partner of his own.

Perhaps Pepe’s greatest challenge was that when he picked up the ball and tried to drive inside Axel Tuanzebe felt able to follow him every step of the way, often doubling up on him with Scott McTominay. The issue for the Ivorian was that he had few options close by once he had been shepherded into that blind alley.

Calum Chambers did not pose enough of a threat on the overlap to concern Tuanzebe whilst infield were Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, again not the sort of players who make telling contributions in the final third.

Add Hector Bellerin to the mix and Pepe ought to be a far more dangerous proposition. His darts infield can free up space for the Spaniard to dash in behind, forcing defenders to make immediate decisions on how to cope with this double threat. The former Lille man notably looked more effective going forward with Ainsley Maitland-Niles performing a similar role but Bellerin will eventually do so to even greater effect.

Perhaps only then will we see the best of Pepe - and frankly that is a much shorter wait than rival clubs have had before they have seen Son Heung-min, Leroy Sane or countless others hit their peak - but at least Arsenal supporters need not wait all that much longer.

Does Emery understand what the fans want?

It still feels woefully premature to be seriously questioning whether Unai Emery should be Arsenal manager - frankly he is on target for his goal of a top four finish even if this has been a start to the season that has felt more fumbling than thrilling.

If Arsenal are on target why does there seem to be such a divide between Emery and the club’s supporters? To an extent social media has toxified the environment around many clubs, particularly those with as major a global online following as the Gunners. The simple news that Mesut Ozil had not travelled to Manchester led to a torrent of #EmeryOut tweets; that is of course not representative of how the majority of supporters feel.

But there is no real sign of much warmth. The “Unai Emery’s barmy army” chant is rarely uttered by the away support this season whilst the booing of Granit Xhaka when he was substituted against Aston Villa felt as much aimed at the head coach, who continues to favour this most trusted of lieutenants, over the players supporters want to see.

Frankly Xhaka has come to typify what Arsenal supporters don’t like about Emery. Slow football that seems focused on avoiding defeats before winning games is one thing but when it comes with a reliable supply of errors it is little wonder patience is frayed.

Emery’s side improved as the game progressed but both Wright and Van Persie were unhappy with the way the Spaniard set up his side at Old Trafford.

‘The disappointing thing from my side of it, when you look at chances created, Arsenal did do as much in the second half but I think his selection initially [was wrong],’ Wright told Optus Sport.

With [Granit] Xhaka being the captain it then takes it away from [Lucas] Torreira, because I think Torreira should start and he did.

‘But I do believe [Dani] Ceballos should start.

‘They could have the protection of Torreira and [Matteo] Guendouzi and a bit more creativity.

‘Because when you see Aubameyang get one chance, he takes the chance.

‘If you get a midfielder on it who is going to at least try to get the ball into areas where he can run on to it, if he gets another chance he may score another goal.

‘I think the manager is just being a bit too cautious.

‘It was a Manchester United team that were lacking in a bit of confidence.

‘Yes, [Marcus] Rashford and [Paul] Pogba were back but I think that Arsenal should have been a little bit more offensive and really put them under pressure.

Nicolas Pepe struggled to make an impact against Manchester United

‘You’ve got a centre-half playing at left-back [Axel Tuanzebe] and not enough pressure put on him.

‘I think [Nicolas] Pepe has got to do a lot more at the moment, we want to see a lot more from him.

‘But I have to go back to the coach, he wasn’t positive enough for me.’
When asked for his verdict on Emery, Van Persie replied: ‘I agree. The way they started in the second half they should have started the first half.

‘More pressure, chasing the game. Even though you’re just starting the game, try to win it.

‘Try to play positive, try to attack.

‘They waited 45 minutes for that, it’s too late playing in a game like that.’
