[h=2]Battle of the bosses[/h][h=4]Fergie[/h]Selection
FERGIE left out Javier Hernandez but his starting line-up was still full of flair and attacking intent.
Tactics
WIDE-BOYS Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young were unleashed down the flanks to torment the visitors.
Temper
A RELATIVELY relaxing day by Fergie’s usual standards. The hairdryer remained unplugged.
Substitutions
INSPIRED call taking Tom Cleverley off before he had the chance to turn his yellow card into a red.
Verdict
OK, this may not have been 8-2 but Fergie’s clear thinking shone through on the pitch.
8/10

[h=4]Wenger[/h]Selection
WHY on earth did Arsene Wenger start midweek hero Theo Walcott and his lethal pace on the bench?
Tactics
PLAYING Olivier Giroud on his own in attack to try to dominate possession back-fired badly.
Temper
WENGER flipped over the penalty against Santi Cazorla — as fourth official Phil Dowd found out.
Substitutions
WHY didn’t he follow Fergie’s example and take off Jack Wilshere before he got his second yellow?
Verdict
A BAD day at the office for the Frenchman. Team, tactics and motivation were poor.
1/10

[h=3]ARSENE WENGER rejected claims he should have taken off Jack Wilshere before he was sent off.[/h]Wenger’s Arsenal were given a caning by Alex Ferguson’s United.
And Fergie won the battle of the bosses, too.
Ref Mike Dean told Wilshere and Tom Cleverley they were both on a final warning after they tangled on the hour.
Fergie quickly got midfielder Cleverley out of the firing line before he could collect a second yellow card.
But Wenger left a tiring Wilshere out on the pitch.
And the England midfielder, making only his second start after 17 months out injured, saw red for a second booking when he went through Patrice Evra on 69 minutes. Even though Wenger accepted that Wilshere looked knackered, he refused to take the blame.
The Arsenal boss said: “It was not deserved. He went for the ball.
“His game is commitment and sometimes it happens, especially when you are tired.
“I’ll have to see it again but it did not look to me at all that he went over the ball on purpose.”
Wenger has often felt wronged at Old Trafford, where his side have not won since 2006.
But Fergie admitted he could see BOTH Cleverley and Wilshere were walking a tightrope if they stayed on the field. The Scot decided to sub Cleverley and was rewarded by a sparkling cameo from Brazilian star Anderson.
The United chief said: “The referee warned both players for their third foul and I decided to take Thomas off.
“I think Jack Wilshere was warned for his third foul on Robin van Persie and then Thomas has a foul on Jack Wilshere and was warned by Mike Dean, so I wasn’t going to take a chance.
“Ando changed the game for us a bit, gave us penetration from midfield, attacked them and did well for us.”
The lunchtime shootout went badly for Arsenal from the start as former Gunner Robin van Persie opened the scoring for United with just two minutes and 38 seconds on the clock. Thomas Vermaelen failed to clear Rafael’s cross and hitman Van Persie struck his 10th goal of the season with his weaker right foot.
Wayne Rooney then missed a penalty, Antonio Valencia missed a sitter and Van Persie was twice denied by Arsenal keeper Vito Mannone.
United skipper Evra finally wrapped up the points with a 67th-minute second.
Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla pulled one back in injury time but United were never seriously troubled.
Defeat means Arsenal have collected just 15 points from their opening 10 games — their worst start since Wenger took charge in 1996.
They also face a key clash with Schalke in midweek as they look to avoid their Champions League hopes going up in smoke. But Wenger felt his team shot themselves in the foot with their grim opening.
He added: “We put ourselves in trouble. Most of the problems we had were our own mistakes when we had the ball and lost it, especially the first goal which is important in a game like that.
“It came very early and Manchester United were in a position where they could defend and catch us on the counter-attack, and that was what happened.
“I am disappointed of course, because we had a lot of the ball, but we were not very efficient in our final third or in their final third. Then you feel the domination was a bit illusionary — we had a lot of the ball, but they created more and deserved to win.”
