AT least 921 officials in local authorities including directors were prosecuted or given other punishment over allegations of embezzlement and misuse of public offices in the last four years, the National Assembly here was told on Tuesday.
The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Mr Aggrey Mwanri, told the House that in 2006/2007, some 215 officials were charged with misuse of funds, while in the following year 297 others faced the same charges.
He was responding to a question by Mr Masoud Abdallah Salim (Mtambile-CUF), who wanted to know action taken by the government against officials misusing public funds.
Mr Mwanri said in 2008/09 some 307 officials were charged with embezzlement. He said from 2006/07 and 2009/10 some 30 councils misused public funds and appropriate action taken against culprits.
Mr Mwanri further said 33 directors of local authorities faced the government wrath, while others were taken to court for the last five years for misuse of public offices and funds.
He said 14 directors were relieved from their duties, two charged in court and eight others were still waiting for appropriate punishment. He said two suspects were acquitted and regained their jobs.
The deputy minister said one director was reprimanded, while one had his salary slashed to recover the misused funds.
He told the House that the government through local governments has come up with regulations during this 2010/2011 fiscal year, to punish indisciplined officials.
