President Yoweri Museveni has issued a stern warning to Members of Parliament and government officials, declaring that “enough is enough” regarding leaders who fail to improve the lives of ordinary Ugandans despite receiving public resources and government support programs.
Speaking during the opening of the 12th Parliament at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala, Museveni criticized leaders presiding over persistent poverty in villages while government initiatives such as the Parish Development Model continue receiving funding.
The President said he was unhappy that some Ugandans remain poor despite years of government wealth-creation campaigns, warning that ministers and leaders who fail to deliver services risk dismissal. According to Museveni, leadership positions should translate into measurable improvements in household incomes, production, and community welfare.
Museveni also used the occasion to challenge Parliament’s new leadership to focus on accountability, discipline, and national development rather than personal interests and political excitement. His remarks came shortly after the election of Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth as Speaker and Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
In one of the lighter moments of his speech, Museveni referenced celebrations surrounding Arsenal F.C.’s Premier League triumph, questioning how leaders could fully celebrate football success while sections of Ugandans were still trapped in poverty.
The President’s comments are being interpreted as part of a broader anti-corruption and performance campaign within government institutions following growing public criticism over corruption allegations, misuse of public funds, and declining trust in political leaders.
Museveni further urged legislators to prioritise wealth creation, value addition, industrialisation, and service delivery during the new parliamentary term, saying Uganda’s progress would depend on leaders producing tangible results rather than rhetoric.
