The Ministry of Internal Affairs has directed all former ministers and unelected Members of Parliament to immediately surrender their diplomatic passports and apply for ordinary passports instead.

Speaking on the matter, Internal Affairs spokesperson Simon Peter Mundeyi clarified that the privileges associated with diplomatic passports automatically cease once an official leaves public office.

Mundeyi explained that diplomatic passports are issued to individuals serving in specific government capacities and are intended to facilitate official state duties and international engagements on behalf of Uganda.

“Once a person’s term of office ends, the entitlement to a diplomatic passport also ends,” he said, emphasizing that former officials who no longer represent the government in any official capacity are not eligible to retain diplomatic status.

The directive affects former ministers and parliamentary candidates who were not elected in the recently concluded electoral processes. The ministry has urged all affected individuals to comply with the requirement and begin the process of obtaining ordinary passports if they intend to continue travelling internationally.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has warned that retaining or using a diplomatic passport without authorization could amount to misuse of a government document and may attract legal consequences.
