Kenyans have less than one day left before the deadline for SIM Card registration lapses on Saturday, October 15, 2022.
According to a directive issued by the Communications Authority of Kenya on April 14 this year, the process of registration concludes on October 15th, 2022 after which the authority warned of regulatory measures including shutdown for non-registered members.
The previous deadline for SIM registration had been set for April 15th but it was extended by another six months to allow network operators and subscribers enough time for compliance.
“So far, Safaricom PLC has reported 67 per cent compliance, Airtel Kenya 55 per cent while Telkom Kenya is at 33 per cent. In order to ensure that operators meet their obligation, the Authority has decided to extend the SIM card registration validation period for a further six (6) months,” CA Director General Ezra Chiloba said in April.
“The new deadline for updating subscriber registration details will be 15th October 2022,” said the CA boss.” With less than 24 hours left, Kenyans with unregistered SIM cards are required to provide their primary personal details including an original ID card for Kenyan citizens or an original and valid passport for aliens.
CA informs that the primary objective of the process is to protect consumers of telecommunication services since all the service operators will retain a copy of the identification documents of every subscriber.
According to a recent report by the Authority, about 287,214 unregistered SIM cards were deactivated by mobile operators between April and June this year.
