I just realised how quite ignorant and shallow some of us (is it most of us?) are about Zika, its history, the different strains out there with respective differences between asian and african Zika virus and the importance of NIMR's findings.

I will say this again. Finding Zika virus (or any other virus) as part of any preliminary research should only be grounds for further research if the strain is unknown (or simply, if results are uncertain). Not grounds for terminating employment as in the case of Dr Malecela and/or under-appreciate her research team. I challenge you to go read more about Zika and in your own time, find out the connection with other Flaviviridae.

Start here for recent research: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/09/160901125057.htm

Then read between the lines here (more technical): http://biorxiv.org/content/biorxiv/early/2016/09/19/075747.full.pdf

Then lastly, nails on the coffin: One year into the Zika outbreak: how an obscure disease became a global health emergency

PS: Anyone with the report from NIMR?
