The Tanzanian government has announced a directive on Sugar Price Controls for Mainland Tanzania in response to public complaints about the rising costs of sugar. The price control directive came into effect on January 23, 2024, across all regions of Mainland Tanzania with the aim of regulating the arbitrary pricing of this commodity.
According to the government announcement, anyone selling sugar above the specified price controls will be committing an offense. If found guilty, they will be liable for penalties as stipulated in the Sugar Industry Act.
The retail price controls for 1 kilogram of sugar are as follows: In Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, and Pwani regions, the price ranges from Tsh. 2,700 to 3,000. In Iringa, Mbeya, Songwe, and Njombe regions, the price is between Tsh. 2,700 and 3,000. In Dodoma, Singida, and Tabora regions, the price is between Tsh. 2,800 and 3,000. In Lindi, Mtwara, and Ruvuma regions, the price is between Tsh. 2,900 and 3,200.
For the regions of Geita, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Simiyu, and Mara, the price ranges from Tsh. 2,800 to 3,000. In Tanga, Kilimanjaro, Arusha, and Manyara regions, the price is between Tsh. 2,700 and 3,000. Lastly, in Kagera, Kigoma, Katavi, and Rukwa regions, the price ranges from Tsh. 2,800 to 3,200.
