Bottomline
Academic career isn't a walk in the park as most people seem to believe/think/presume. It needs dedication (to your work), ambition(to be the best), patience&sympathy(with students), writing(a lot of that, and you need to be good at it), reading(that too, unless you want to be a T.A. for the rest of your career), etc. The flexible lucrative hours that lecturers get tend to be deceptive to many. They aren't hours to roam about but hours to do research, go through several references for the courses that you are teaching , do consultation(not only to your clients(if you are lucky enough to have any) but also to your students), write, etc.
If you want to get into an academic career, you have to think long and hard before jumping head-first into a rocky stream. You might end up spending 24-25 years( primary to postdoc) of your beautiful short life in school to just to find yourself in your mid-40s, sharing a flat with your research assistant(of identical gender :-( ), driving a 10 yrs old buick, having a bank balance of a college intern, earning a mere 2M per month and supporting an extended family of 20 comprising of people who think you are a billionaire only because your name starts with PROF. ( While the real billionaire is your farmer-cum-businessman sibling who started selling boiled yams at the age of 9 and never went past std.III). To add insult to the injury, the retirement fund is also a joke!!
The upside- if you can be selfish without your guilt conscience haunting you- is, you can get into the academic career for the hours and the security( tenure) that it brings while running your deals on the side. You have to come to terms with being baptized names such as KILAZA, MIYEYU, MZUSHI, WAMADESA, MZINGUAJI &BOYA, though.
All being said, we make our own destiny. At the risk of sounding arrogant, one is always as rich as one desires. Making money is much like playing tennis: If you keep your eyes on the score board( i.e how much money you are making) there's a great chance(99.9%) of loosing the game. You gotta/outta keep your eye on the ball ( i.e whatever it is that you do, make sure you are the best. Focus on giving the best ), the scores will set themselves( to your advantage, if you are playing right). Keep Rocking!!
