[h=3]MANCHESTER UNITED made a £38m deadline day attempt to land Brazil superstar Neymar.[/h]The club record bid failed when the Santos ace, 20, said he wanted to stay put until after his country had hosted the 2014 World Cup.
United boss Alex Ferguson's approach puts Wayne Rooney's position at the club even further into question and the Scot will not be afraid to try again for the goalscoring sensation in the January transfer window.
United turned to Neymar after losing out to Paris St Germain in the chase for another Brazilian, Lucas Moura.
They had offered £32m for the Sao Paulo 19-year-old but the French club landed him for £38m.
Ferguson promptly turned to Neymar, who has hit 113 goals in 190 games for Santos but the bold approach failed.
It would have been the joint-highest fee paid for a player from outside the UK - alongside Manchester City's purchase of Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid - and taken the club's spending this summer to £80m.
Real Madrid and Barcelona have also courted Neymar, who scored three goals at the Olympic Games before Brazil lost the final to Mexico.

Manchester United have been at the forefront of a push for stricter financial controls in the Premier League, according to Wigan chairman Dave Whelan.
Uefa's new Financial Fair Play rules apply from the start of next season.
[h=2]What is FFP?[/h]

• Uefa wants clubs to balance their books over a three-year period starting from the 2013-14 season.
• It is not until 2018 that clubs have to bring their annual deficits to below £8.8m on current exchange rates.
• Uefa will have the power to ban any side that repeatedly flouts the rules from European competition.

And Whelan says United suggested the measures should also be adopted in the Premier League at a meeting earlier this summer.
"This proposal has come from Manchester United," Whelan said.
"I think [Manchester] City haven shaken them up a little bit, but there should be some controls on spending. Some clubs are spending way more than they can afford and get into trouble - look at Portsmouth.
"The Premier League is so big and powerful and there is so much money around that the clubs try to chase it. Something has to be done so we will support these measures."
Two groups of 10 top-flight clubs, mixed on the basis of size and region, will discuss potential options in detail on Thursday but no decision will be made on any measures.
Any proposal would require approval from 14 of the 20 Premier League chairman to be introduced.
Uefa president Michel Platini told BBC Radio 5 live that Premier League owners are keen to adopt new financial measures.
He said: "The Championship will follow the rules of FFP and I know that some clubs in the Premier League are very happy about that. Many investors in English football will come because of FFP and I think it's a good idea for the future of football.
"Many [Premier League] owners ask me to implement that because they can't do it in their own society."
