Sir Alex Ferguson is refusing to be held to ransom in his search for the players to restore United's Premier League dominance. Luka Modric, Leighton Baines (pictured) and Shinji Kagawa are Ferguson's top targets this summer after already missing out on Eden Hazard. But despite the need to rebuild at Old Trafford, the United manager is refusing to spend over the odds in a bid to keep up with City as well as challenge in the Champions League. Ferguson has long complained of a lack of value in the market, which has seen him miss out on Karim Benzema, Wesley Sneijder and Samir Nasri in recent years. Hazard became the latest name to join that list last week – opting for a move to Chelsea despite interest from both Manchester clubs.

That has pushed long-term target Modric back into the frame but Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy's fierce negotiating skills could kill off any chance of a move to United. Spurs demanded £18.6m for Michael Carrick when he left White Hart Lane in 2006 and a club record £30.75m fee for Dimitar Berbatov two years later. United will have to exceed that figure again to prise Croatian international Modric away. Ferguson is a big admirer of the 26-year-old, who cost £16.6m when he signed from Dynamo Zagreb in 2008.

Levy fought off the interest of Chelsea last summer, but a second year without Champions League football could see Modric looking for a move. Midfield is a priority, even after agreeing a one-year extension to Paul Scholes' contract. Ferguson will hope Tom Cleverley plays a more prominent role after he was hampered by injury for much of last season, while Darren Fletcher continues to battle ulcerative colitis. Borussia Dortmund's attacking midfielder Kagawa is close to completing a move for a fee of around £14m. As revealed by M.E.N. Sport last week, Everton left-back Baines is another player Ferguson has set his sights on to provide genuine competition for Patrice Evra. But he will not pay the £20m being quoted for the Everton defender – valuing him at closer to £12m. While United's stance is understandable, they cannot afford to stand still in a summer that will see City and Chelsea spend heavily on new recruits. Ferguson also needs to add to his strike-force after releasing Michael Owen, while Berbatov is also set to leave

. Dortmund forward Robert Lewandowski is another player he has watched. While United are taking a firm approach on bringing more players in, they are also having to negotiate hard to keep Nani at the club. Manchester United's Danny Welbeck thrilled with first England goal Manchester United set for summer clear-out The Portuguese winger is in talks over a new deal as he enters the last 18 months of his current contract. And he has hinted that he is willing to leave if a deal is not agreed. He said: "Football is not only about England or Spain. It is possible to enjoy success in other countries. "My agent is waiting on news about United. We have presented a counter-offer and now we are waiting on an offer from the club.

I have fulfilled five seasons with United and obtained all the titles." There is, however, some good news with defender Nemanja Vidic hoping to be fit for the start of the season. The 30-year-old has been out since December because of damaged knee ligaments. "I can now run and do some things on the pitch which is better for me psychologically because for the last four months it's been every day in the gym, which is hard. "But the worst part is behind me. I can look forward to the second half of the rehabilitation and work more on my fitness. "Hopefully, I'll be fit for the big kick-off."

Manchester United announce deal to sign Shinji Kagawa

Manchester United have made their first signing of the summer after confirming they have "reached agreement" to buy Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund.

Negotiations have been on-going with the Japan international for a number of weeks.
The deal is subject to a medical and work permit, although this is thought to be a formality.
It is not anticipated the deal will be completed until the end of the month as Kagawa is currently on international duty and played in Japan's 3-0 World Cup qualifying round victory over Oman at the weekend.
"Manchester United is delighted to announce that it has agreed terms with both Borussia Dortmund and Shinji Kagawa for his transfer to the club," said a United statement.
"The deal is subject only to the player medical and obtaining a UK work permit. These conditions are anticipated to be completed by the end of June.
"Further details will be announced in due course."
Although the deal - which is expected to cost around £12million - has been anticipated for some time, it is good news for United.
Yesterday, Eden Hazard explained why he thought Chelsea had "a better project" than the Red Devils, who lost their Premier League crown to Manchester City in agonising fashion last month.
Many United fans are privately concerned about the funds being made available to Sir Alex Ferguson and felt strengthening the midfield area was an absolute imperative.
Kagawa has already done enough in his two seasons in Germany to avoid the fate of Park Ji-sung, who was initially condemned as a "trophy" signing following his arrival from PSV Eindhoven in 2005, designed purely to sell shirts in the lucrative Far East market.
He was named in the Bundesliga's team of the season for 2010-11 despite being absent through injury for half the campaign.
Kagawa then went on to score 16 goals last term, when Dortmund completed the domestic league and cup double.
Ferguson and assistant Mike Phelan made a personal check on the 23-year-old the day before United's final match at Sunderland, when they saw Kagawa grab one goal and create another in Dortmund's 5-2 German Cup triumph over Bayern Munich.
Defender Rio Ferdinand was quick to offer his best wishes on Twitter.
"Welcome to Shinji Kagawa for his transfer to Man Utd," he said. "Here's to a succesful (sic) time here bro!"
Kagawa factfile:
1989: Born March 17 in Kobe, Japan.
2006: Joins first professional team, Cerezo Osaka, aged 17 and is selected for Japan Under-17s.
2007: Represents Japan at the Fifa Under-20s World Cup in Canada after an impressive season in which he plays 35 games in J.League Division 2.
2008: Handed his Japan debut in a Kirin Cup match against Ivory Coast. Also represents his country in the Beijing Olympics.
2009: Breaks several records in the league, including becoming the highest goalscorer in J.League Division 2, as Osaka are promoted to the top flight.
2010: Scores seven goals in 11 appearances in the J.League, leading Borussia Dortmund to pay 350,000 (£283,371) for his services, but misses out on a place in Japan's World Cup squad.
2011: Helps Japan win the Asian Cup, although does not play in the final as a superb tournament is ended by a metatarsal injury in the semis. Ends the 2010/11 season with an eight-goal haul for Dortmund, who win their first Bundesliga title in nine years.

2012: Helps Dortmund to a domestic league and cup double.

Manchester United have reportedly signed Chilean wonder boy Angelo Hooray Henriquez from Universidad de Chile for a sum of £3m.

article-1371703-0B693BE500000578-113_468x434.jpg

The 18 year old netted eight goals for the Chilean club in ten matches and has caught the attention of scouts from top clubs across Europe. It is believed that United have been monitoring the young striker for over a year now and will complete the deal anytime soon.Henriquez has been wanted by plenty clubs in Europe, but it seems like the talented South American is finally heading to Old Trafford. The transfer will however be completed only once the club can acquire a work permit for the player in UK, but citing him as a ‘special talent', the Red Devils wanted to get him at any price.

However, United are likely to ship the striker off to another European club on loan so as to get him more playing time which he is unlikely to get at Old Trafford at the present moment.
Just over a year back Ferguson signed Javier Hernandez from Mexico for a paltry sum of £10m and the player has since proved to be a top quality signing. It is to be seen if the manager has managed another masterstroke by signing this rising star of Chilean football.

The 18-year-old striker has played 753 minutes for Universidad Chile, scoring a hugely impressive eight goals, including two in a 6-0 rout of Deportivo Quito in the Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the Champions League.

Henriquez has also been a star at Under-17 level where he scored three goals in four matches at the South American Championships in March.

Whilst the transfer has come out the blue, Henriquez has trained with Manchester United on two separate occasions and in May said: "I would love to play in Manchester at Old Trafford – the Theatre of Dreams – alongside Wayne Rooney

Tottenham demand £35m for Modric as Sir Alex bides time for Croatia midfielder

United are set to beat Chelsea to the Spurs playmaker, once the he returns from Euro 2012, but had hoped to pay around £25m initially with a further £5m in performance-related additions. Modric is in line for a bumper four-year contract worth £125,000-a-week, and £26m in all. The 26-year-old midfielder is preparing for Euro 2012 with the Croatia squad but will sort his future once his tournament is over.

Slaven Bilic's side face a fight to qualify from a tough group, which contains Italy, Spain and the Republic of Ireland, their first opponents of the tournament in Poznan on Sunday. Despite the £17m signing this week of midfielder Shinji Kagawa, United fans have been desperate for the club to splash out on a big name.

Supporters are concerned that United's spending power in the transfer market in being inhibited by using funds to pay off the owning Glazer family's debt. Tottenham had to fight to keep Modric out of Chelsea's clutches last year. But with Harry Redknapp's side narrowly missing out on Champions League football next season, the club look likely to lose several big stars this summer.

Man United finally agree £4m deal for Crewe play-off final hero Powell
Manchester United have agreed a £4m deal for Crewe attacking midfielder Nick Powell, 18. Powell's marvellous goal helped his team overcome Cheltenham 2-0 in the League Two play-off final. Sir Alex Ferguson has been tracking Powell for several weeks and now the Red Devils have made their move.
Around £2m of the fee is paid up front and the rest will follow, based on the teenager's appearances. It is possible the youngster will go back to Crewe on loan for a season and he is thought to be anxious to secure he will be playing regular football next season.

Pogba sends farewell text to United mates as Juve switch edges closer

Paul Pogba has sent a farewell text to his Manchester United team-mates as he waits for his move to Juventus to be confirmed. Pogba is expected to pen a four-year deal at Juventus on July 1 after deciding against signing a new contract with United.

The midfielder heads for the newly-crowned Serie A champions but will not comment on the move until his United agreement runs out at the end of next month. Pogba will then officially become a Juventus player on £20,000 a week. The France Under 19 midfielder's decision was made known in a letter from his agent Mino Raiola to United chief executive David Gill, but there has been no contact between the player and manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The player's departure brings the long drawn out battle to keep him at United to a controversial conclusion. Pogba was rated one of the best young products in the club's academy, which he joined from French outfit Le Havre in 2009. He made his Premier League debut when he came on as a 72nd-minute replacement for Javier Hernandez against Stoke City in January.

Manchester United have completed the signing of Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund on a four-year deal.
The Red Devils announced earlier this month that they had agreed terms with the German club for Kagawa, and the transfer has now been finalised after he passed a medical on Friday.
Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted to have secured the services of the 23-year-old and expects him to enjoy a successful career at Old Trafford.
"Shinji is an exciting young midfielder with great skill, vision and a good eye for goal," said Ferguson.
"I am delighted he has chosen to come to United.
"I believe he will make an impact upon the team very quickly as he is suited to United's style of play.
"We are all looking forward to working with him."

Exciting time

Having been ruled out of Olympic duty in London this summer, it is anticipated Kagawa will be part of United's pre-season tour to South Africa and China.
And Kagawa is relishing the prospect of linking up with his new team-mates and trying to perform well in the Premier League.
"This is a challenge I am really looking forward to," he said.
"The Premier League is the best league in the world and Manchester United is such a massive club.
"This is a really exciting time for me. I can't wait to meet the team and start playing."

Kagawa: Star attraction on tour

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell will be a part of Manchester United's pre-season tour of South Africa and China.
Kagawa and Powell are two of the few certainties in the travelling party after Ferguson's summer plans were hit by the need to rest players after Euro 2012 and also the departures of others, including Ryan Giggs and David de Gea, for Olympic duty.
The Red Devils are also supplying three players to England's European Under-19 Championship quest, while Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling will not be considered due to injury and Darren Fletcher is due to begin the first tentative stages of his comeback from a chronic bowel complaint.
The pressures on his squad means Ferguson is unlikely to know until the eve of departure exactly who will be on the flight to Durban on July 16.

Kagawa will be there, though, offering United fans the first opportunity to see him in action since his summer move from Borussia Dortmund.
The 23-year-old will be joined by the Red Devils' other new boy, England Under-18 star Powell, who has signed from Crewe.
"It's obviously very difficult in a year when we have had a Euro tournament and we also have the Olympics this year," said Ferguson.
"The final squad hasn't been decided yet but we will be taking the strongest team we have available.
"We are all looking forward to the pre-season tour. I am delighted that our new newest signings, Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell, will be in the travelling squad along with more established players such as Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Ji Sung-Park."
Ferguson added: "I have always said how important it is to get a good pre-season behind us.
"We saw the impact a good pre-season had on the start of last year's campaign."
United announced a pre-season game against Barcelona in Gothenburg on August 8 earlier this week, but there are still no details of the second game United will play in China on their upcoming tour.
One match against Didier Drogba's new club Shanghai Shenhua has already been confirmed, but there has been no word about where, when or a gainst whom the second match will take place.

Brazilian full back Rafael has signed a new four year contract at Man Utd to keep him at old trafford until the summer of 2016. Good news for all Man Utd die hard fans.

New numbers for trio

Antonio Valencia will wear the iconic no.7 shirt for Manchester United in 2012/13.
ManUtd.com can also reveal that summer signings Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa will wear no.25 and no.26 respectively.
Ecuador winger Valencia requested the no.7 shirt - worn previously by United legends such as George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo - following Michael Owen's departure this summer.
The Reds' remaining squad numbers for the 2012/13 season are yet to be confirmed.
