Paul Scholes highlighted the growing discontent at Manchester United by turning on Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba.
The Old Trafford legend was scathing in his assessment of his former club after they succumbed to a third draw in succession and dropped out of the top two for the first time this season.
A goalless draw with Southampton on Saturday evening continued what has been a miserable Christmas for Mourinho as United’s Premier League challenge has unravelled.
Scholes - who infuriated Louis van Gaal with his constant criticism of the Dutchman’s United reign - has now turned his fire on Mourinho.
“The players are definitely under-performing and maybe the manager is too,” he told BT Sport.
“The underperforming is carrying on, carrying on, carrying on and the manager has to take responsibility for that.
“United look a tired team, they look like they have played 50 or 60 games this season already and we are halfway through.
“I know the crowd were quiet but you have to give them something. They gave them absolutely nothing, it was dead out there today.
Scholes claims United’s hopes of Champions League football are now in jeopardy as the cracks begin to appear in Mourinho’s squad.
“I swear to God, they need to liven up, this team, because top four isn’t even guaranteed from this moment,” he added.
“You have got some good teams in there - Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal - and they will all be challenging.
Scholes was heavily critical of Mourinho and United
“They have to concentrate and liven up and really find some energy from somewhere - and the manager needs to listen.
“Mourinho has been doing this job for a long time, but there is a real lack of leadership on that pitch.
“They are too nice to each other - they need to have a go at each other.
“Young players are not being helped by the experienced players.
“It’s just a lack of urgency for me. It seems like they’re winning 3-0 every game and they don’t need to score a goal.
“There’s no actual fight.”
Scholes believes United’s record signing Pogba is indicative of the problems facing Mourinho.
The Frenchman inadvertently cost his side three points when converting Nemanja Matic’s goal-bound effort over the line from an offside position.
But Scholes pointed to £89m man’s all round performances since returning to United two summers ago.
“Where’s the Paul Pogba we saw at Juventus?” he said. “The player they bought.
“He was all over the pitch, he was tackling, he was fighting, he was sprinting to people, he was scoring goals from 25 yards out.
“He’s just strolling through a game.”
