MANCHESTER UNITED took a giant stride towards Wembley after shooting down Schalke.
Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney hit a lightning two-goal burst to leave United dreaming of a Champions League final.
Giggs crashed home the first on 66 minutes after Manuel Neuer's heroics had kept Alex Ferguson's men at bay.
And Rooney was on target two minutes later to put United in the box seat for the second leg.
Schalke had the first sniff when Alexander Baumjohann shot at Edwin van der Sar in the opening minute. At the other end, Rooney tested Neuer with a cheeky dink from the edge.
Ji-Sung Park was next to threaten before Javier Hernandez blew the first gilt-edged chance.
The Mexican hotshot sprung the Schalke offside trap but poked his shot straight at Neuer.
Hernandez had another effort in the 20th minute but screwed his pot-shot just wide. And Chicarito was at it AGAIN a minute later when Rooney set him free in the box.
He then slalomed past Atsuto Achida only to pull back when a shot was on the cards.
United were running Schalke ragged and on 35 minutes they wasted a trio of chances.
First, Hernandez gunned one at Neuer before Park saw the follow-up blocked.
And Giggs smashed the next rebound wide as Schalke somehow survived.
Giggs had another chance before the break when Rooney sent him clear. But Neuer was a giant once more and denied the veteran star as Schalke held United to half-time.
The Germany keeper had a storming first 45 minutes - and it was no different after the break.
Neuer clawed away Patrice Evra's fizzing header just seconds into the second period.
Raul carved out a rare half-chance on the hour but United were up to the task.
And Giggs finally broke the deadlock on 67 minutes after Rooney's laser pass through.
Roo carved Schalke apart and Giggs slotted under Neuer to give United a richly-deserved lead.
The Germans had held out for so long - yet they collapsed again two minutes later.
Hernandez picked the ball up on the edge and poked to Rooney, who slid past Neuer.
Evra teamed up with Nani to streak through near the end - only to pop his shot wide from close range.
But it did not matter one jot for United, who are firmly in the driving seat for next week's second leg

Make no mistake, this was as accomplished a Champions League semi-final performance you could wish to see as United had Schalke chasing shadows in a comprehensive 2-0 victory.
There's still a second leg to come before the manager and anybody else will be thinking of planning for Wembley but, in truth, only Manuel Neuer's brilliance saved his side from an embarrassing scoreline.
Neuer defied United virtually single-handedly before two quickfire goals - by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney - ensured justice was done. Rooney was the provider for Giggs' opener and then found the net himself after cunning play by strike partner Javier Hernandez.
Sir Alex Ferguson opted for a 4-4-2 formation with in-form Hernandez proving impossible to leave out. Fabio started at right-back with Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Giggs and Ji-sung Park forming the midfield quartet.
In a breathless opening period, both sides carved out chances with Edwin van der Sar worked by Alexander Baumjohann and Edu while Neuer showed his class at the other end.
