De Gea
An uncharacteristic spill almost gave West
Ham the lead in the first half, otherwise the
Spaniard did his job well and was
particularly commanding at set-pieces.
1.
C. Smalling
The England international did little wrong
against Carroll, whose aggressive style of
play made him a nuisance. Stood up to the
task well and made a vital challenge to
deny Zarate a certain goal.
12.
P. McNair
Deployed as a makeshift right-back, the
young defender delivered a few decent
crosses but at the other end he struggled
with Cresswell. Withdrawn for a natural full-
back in Varela at half-time.
33.
M. Darmian
Shifted to left-back due to Rojo's absence,
the right-footed full-back was generally
dependable but when forced to cross with
his weaker foot, on several occasions he
wasted good chances.
36.
M. Fellaini
A real nuisance to the West Ham defence
with his physicality and aerial prowess.
Went close early on but Reid generally
came out on top in their duel.
27.
M. Schneide...
A busy presence in the middle and made a
couple of tackles on the edge of his own
area. Injury forced him off just before the
break, however.
28.
B. Schweins...
Perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch after
striking Reid in the chest, but otherwise the
German was solid, as he distributed well
and offered some bite in the middle.
31.
D. Blind
Made a couple of errors which West Ham
should have punished, with his passing out
from the back very sloppy in particular.
17.
Mata
Nowhere near his influential best. Created
little of note and struggled to impose
himself, with West Ham very quick to close
him down. A real disappointment.
8.
J. Lingard
Probably United's brightest creator, the
winger was lively on the left and troubled
West Ham with his direct running and clever
use of possession.
35.
A. Martial
The young Frenchman will have been
hoping to star in Rooney's absence but luck
was not on his side. Came to life in the
second half and gave West Ham plenty to
think about, but his finishing let him down.
9.
G. Varela
Handed his Premier League debut as a
half-time substitute. Found Zarate a tricky
customer but by no means was he
disgraced.
30.
M. Carrick
Introduced just before the break due to
Schneiderlin's injury. Used the ball well but
offered significantly less steel than the
Frenchman.
16.
M. Depay
Produced a few positive runs after his 73rd-
minute introduction. Troubled with his
direct running and set Martial up for what
should have been a winning goal only for
the Frenchman to miss.
