WAYNE SUPREME ... Rooney scores a spectacular bicycle kick to earn Manchester United the win
WAYNE ROONEY'S wonder strike kept Manchester United's title bid on track - and killed off City's championship dreams.
The England striker produced a stunning bicycle kick to earn the victory when he got on the end of Nani's cross on 79 minutes.
It was only Rooney's fifth Premier League strike of the campaign but it can already be considered a candidate for goal of the season.
Portuguese winger Nani had opened the scoring after he latched on to Ryan Giggs' brilliantly weighted ball before slotting past City keeper Joe Hart just before half time.
But City clawed their way back into the match after the break and the introduction of £27m man Edin Dzeko - on for hamstring injury victim James Milner - looked to have changed the game.
The Bosnian let fly with an effort on 65 minutes which took a wicked deflection off of David Silva's back before finding its way into the United net.
But Rooney's incredible overhead kick 11 minutes from time ensured United got back to winning ways following last weekend's shock 2-1 defeat to lowly Wolves.
After the match, Rooney said: "That was the best goal I have ever scored. I saw the ball come into the box and I thought 'why not' and thankfully it went into the tiop corner and got us the three points.
"I was in a good position before Nani crossed it but nine times out of ten they go over the bar - luckily it went in.
"I think it's my first one since I started playing as a pro - but I scored one in school!
"But it's important we won after we lost last week and important we kept the gap beteen us and City - it's important we stay at the top of the league."
