[h=1]Under-21s: Manchester United 3 Everton 1[/h] Manchester United Under-21s comfortably overcame Everton 3-1 at Leigh Sports Village with James Weir, James Wilson and Jesse Lingard all on the scoresheet in front of the MUTV cameras.
Sam Johnstone, Lingard and Wilson were handed their first competitive outings for Warren Joyce's side this term and responded with positive performances. Skipper Lingard made a dangerous run to latch onto Sean Goss's fine sixth-minute through ball but could only loft his finish over the bar.
After Wilson was unable to convert an Axel Tuanzebe cross, the striker made an expert touch during a one-two with Weir to allow the blond-haired midfielder to advance and clinically finish past Mateusz Hewelt. Although Johnstone made a routine stop from Callum Connelly, the lead was soon doubled when Josh Harrop performed a crunching tackle on Liam Walsh in midfield. Wilson collected and drove forwards, ignoring the shout of Lingard to slam a trademark finish wide of Hewelt.
Calum Dyson fired well wide after a nice turn but it was a rare opening for the Toffees. At the other end, Hewelt dived to frustrate Harrop following a mazy dribble by the midfield man and Lingard screwed off target following good work by Goss.
Johnstone was forced into making a smart stop as half-time approached when David Henen met Dyson's cross with a goalbound header as the keeper showed off his credentials. In the second half, Harrop scooped over after initially displaying a neat touch to get a Cameron Borthwick-Jackson pass out of his feet before the left-back was involved in the third goal.
Borthwick-Jackson's ball inside went past Weir but was pounced upon by Lingard, who left Ryan Ledson for dead and swept a clever finish into the corner of the net to maintain an impressive scoring record against the Merseysiders. Lingard had a carbon-copy shot kept out by Hewelt from a Goss pass as United hunted more goals.

Johnstone was still able to display his athleticism by making a save from Joe Williams' full-blooded drive look simple and then diving to pull off a wonderful save to keep out Ledson when the ball fell for the Blues youngster just outside the box.
Harrop saw an attempt blocked after nice play by Varela and Weir should have added a fourth when Hewelt blocked with his legs after Harrop's pass dissected the defence. Instead, Everton pulled one back thanks to Dyson's far-post header to a deep cross from Jonjoe Kenny to threaten a late comeback.
Johnstone made a couple more saves which were relatively comfortable and Wilson had a chance that was kept out by Hewelt while Tim Fosu-Mensah was unlucky to see an effort blocked as United played out the closing stages to earn victory in the first home game of the league campaign. The visitors spurned one final chance to reduce the deficit, largely down to some good defending by Weir.
United: Johnstone; Varela, Love, Tuanzebe, Borthwick-Jackson; Fosu-Mensah (Redmond 78), Goss; Weir, Harrop, Lingard; Wilson. Subs not used: J.Pereira, El Fitouri, Riley, Fletcher.

Ferguson and Rooney pose together after the latter agrees his new contract Wayne Rooney's huge salary rise in 2010 caused Sir Alex Ferguson to prevent the Manchester United striker from earning more than him.
Rooney signed a £180,000-a-week five-year contract in October 2010, just months after requesting a transfer, and Ferguson felt undermined by the wage hike.
"When the Glazers... agreed to a big increase in Wayne Rooney's salary in 2010, they wanted to know how I felt," Ferguson writes in his new book.
"I told them I did not think it fair that Rooney should earn twice what I made and Joel Glazer immediately said: ‘I totally agree with you but what should we do?'
"It was simple. We just agreed no player should be paid more than me."
Ferguson also reveals in his second book in as many years he considered signing Mario Balotelli from Internazionale.

"In 2010, I briefly flirted with the idea of signing Mario Balotelli.
"I did my homework on him, speaking to a few Italian contacts, but the feedback I got confirmed it was too big a risk. It was a godsend."

Giggs, Cantona, Scholes and Ronaldo were Ferguson's greatest talents at United Sir Alex Ferguson has named Ryan Giggs, Eric Cantona, Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only world-class players he managed during his 26-and-a-half year reign at Manchester United.
The quartet played crucial roles in Ferguson's three great sides, starting with the 1993-94 double winners through to the 2008 Champions League winners.
Giggs spent 23 years playing for United and is the club's most decorated player, Cantona was the catalyst for The Reds' breakthrough title in 1993, Scholes is one of the most eulogised footballers of his generation and Ronaldo is destined to be remembered as one of the game's greats.
"If you read the papers or listen to the television commentators, we seem to be awash with 'world-class' footballers," Ferguson writes in his new book, Leading.

Fergie's book: The highlights

"In my book there are only two world-class players playing today: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Scholes is one of the most praised players of his generation "I don't mean to demean or criticise any of the great or very good footballers who played for me during my 26-year career at United, but there were only four who were world class: Cantona, Giggs, Ronaldo and Scholes.

GettyImages-1245643.jpg
Cantona's arrival enabled United to win their first title in 26 years "And of the four Cristiano was like an ornament on the top of a Christmas tree."

Giggs enjoyed a phenomenal career at United There are glaring omissions in Ferguson's pantheon, notably Roy Keane, perhaps United's greatest captain, and Rio Ferdinand, arguably the best defender in the world between 2006-08.
Other players, such as Nemanja Vidic and Robin van Persie, have enjoyed world-class spells at United, however Ferguson differentiates sustained form with natural ability.

Ronaldo was a sensational player for United "There were big influences like Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Steve Bruce,' Ferguson added at the Royal Festival Hall on Monday night.

Ferguson failed to convince Pogba to stay at United Sir Alex Ferguson has blamed Paul Pogba's Manchester United departure on the Frenchman's notorious agent, Mino Raiola.
Pogba left United for Juventus on a free transfer in 2012 aged just 19, having spent less than three years with United following a much-publicised move from Le Havre.
United received a mere £800,000 in compensation from Pogba's move and the France international has since won three Serie A titles, was named Best Young Player at last year's World Cup and is, arguably, the most coveted player in world football.
Ferguson felt United's chances of convincing the midfielder to stay were dashed after his first meeting with Raiola.
"There are one or two football agents I simply do not like," Ferguson writes in his new book, Leading . "And Mino Raiola, Paul Pogba's agent, is one of them.

"I distrusted him from the moment I met him. He became Zlatan Ibrahimovic's agent while he was playing for Ajax, and eventually he would end up representing Pogba, who was only 18-years-old at the time.

JS72201206.jpg
Pogba was back in Manchester with Juventus last week "We had Paul under a three-year contract, and it had a one-year renewal option which we were eager to sign. But Raiola suddenly appeared on the scene and our first meeting was a fiasco.
"He and I were like oil and water. From then on, our goose was cooked because Raiola had been able to ingratiate himself with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus."
