A special talent

Hernandez ignites United
Sometimes in football there is nothing quite so exciting as the first time you see a prodigiously talented player in the flesh and realise you might be witnessing something special. It is that rich sense of anticipation, and when it is a young player who shows no sign of trepidation about being handed the keys to the football universe it can feel even more exhilarating and rare. For Manchester United's supporters in Dublin tonight, that sensation was supplied by a player who was barely known outside his native Mexico when his signing was announced in April. Everything we have seen of Javier Hernández since then points to a man of exquisite gifts inside the penalty area, one who is quickly demonstrating why Sir Alex Ferguson believes, post-World Cup, that his true valuation could be three or four times the £8m that Chivas received for him. He had scored within 90 seconds of being introduced, a half-time substitute in a 7-1 win against an Airtricity League XI. It was a rasping, instinctive, first-time shot and the ball was still rising as it hit the back of the net. OK, it was only a pre-season friendly but it was still a stunning finish, the highlight of an evening in which Wayne Rooney played his first 45 minutes since the World Cup but could not soothe his own confidence by being among United's scorers.

Chelsea v Man Utd preview

Double winners up against Red Devils at Wembley

Ancelotti and Ferguson: Wembley clash
Double winners Chelsea tackle Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday, live on Sky Sports HD1 and 1, as both clubs finalise preparations for the new Premier League season.
The traditional curtain-raiser may be regarded by some as nothing more than a glorified friendly, but the first piece of silverware is on offer plus the opportunity to strike an early psychological blow.
For rival bosses Carlo Ancelotti and Sir Alex Ferguson,
it is the last chance to watch their players in action before they depart for midweek international action, a quirk of the fixture calendar which has riled many in the top flight.
Ancelotti has already bemoaned the fact that he does not feel many of his Blues squad are showing the necessary levels of fitness following their World Cup
exertions this summer and a subsequently truncated pre-season programme.
Victory over Crystal Palace
at Selhurst Park in mid-July has been followed by a hat-trick of defeats as Ajax, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hamburg have all found the usually solid Chelsea backline surprisingly generous.
Rooney

United's tour of America featured three victories and two defeats from their five matches before the Red Devils demolished a League of Ireland XI 7-1 in their most recent outing.
Ferguson will have been happy to see his strikers find their touch in front of goal in recent weeks with Dimitar Berbatov, summer signing Javier Hernandez and Michael Owen all on the scoresheet at various times.
The trio will be required to take some of the goalscoring burden off the shoulders of Wayne Rooney, who may have a point to prove this weekend following an utterly miserable World Cup with England and some questionable off-field antics on a recent night out in Manchester.
Owen has already stated his hope that the much-criticised Wembley turf does not force him back onto the sidelines, with the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle striker suffering a hamstring injury in the Carling Cup final which kept him out of the remainder of the season.
Ferguson, who has pledged to give Rooney and Owen at least 45 minutes, is certain to be without midfielder Michael Carrick, who will miss the start of the new season after sustaining an ankle injury in Wednesday night's friendly romp in Dublin.

Doubtful

England captain Rio Ferdinand continues his recovery from the knee injury which wrecked his World Cup dream, while midfielder Anderson, who escaped from a recent car crash relatively unscathed, is closing in on a return to training from his own knee problem.
Rafael and Fabio are rated doubtful for the match as they have been suffering from food poisoning, luckless midfielder Owen Hargreaves remains in America as he attempts to resurrect his career after tendinitis in his knees and Gabriel Obertan (ankle) is out.
Ancelotti has confirmed his starting XI will contain only one change from the side that lost their final pre-season friendly at Hamburg.
Hilario will start in goal in place of Ross Turnbull, with the same outfield players from Wednesday night's game taking to the field at Wembley.
Striker Didier Drogba will be on the bench, while No.1 Petr Cech, defender Alex (both calf) and full-back Jose Boswinga (knee) are all out.

Safari ya kubeba vikombe msimu huu yaanza kesho...karibuni wadau wa Man Utd na haters wote wa Man Utd...!

Shield success for United
Scholes delivers master class in possession in front of Capello

Paul Scholes inspired Manchester United to a clinical display to earn a 3-1 victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley.
Antonio Valencia scored the opening goal in the first half before setting up summer signing Javier Hernandez for a freakishly fortuitous second after half-time, while Dimitar Berbatov scored a magnificent third after Salomon Kalou's consolation.
But the plaudits of the perennial season curtain-raiser should also go to United
veteran Scholes
as the 35-year-old delivered a vintage display to dictate the midfield at Wembley.
It was an added, ironic twist that Scholes should conjure such an impressive lesson in long and short-range possession in a match which was billed as the chance to move on from the World Cup.

Wayne Rooney,
Frank Lampard,
Ashley Cole
and John Terry
were booed by respective rival fans following their abject performances in England's dismal failure in South Africa,
while the watching Fabio Capello was also singled out for verbal abuse.
Scholes had ignored Capello's attempts to lure him out of international retirement prior to the World Cup and his outing on the seemingly perfect, newly-relaid pitch was a wrench of the knife in the torso of England's boss as he prepares for Wednesday's friendly against Hungary.
Kalou set up a lively finish with his late tap-in, but United were the better team in the decisive areas of the pitch and last season's Premier League and FA Cup Double-winners Chelsea will be hugely disappointed by their afternoon.
Michael Carrick was a shock starter for United after the midfielder had only made a surprise return to training on Saturday, having previously been ruled out for a fortnight by boss Sir Alex Ferguson due to an ankle injury.
Michael Owen
made Ferguson's first XI alongside Rooney in what was the former's first competitive appearance since injuring his hamstring at the same venue in February's Carling Cup final.
Laid back

Goalkeeper Hilario started in goal for Chelsea in the injury-enforced absence of Petr Cech, while Branislav Ivanovic partnered Terry at centre-back, and Didier Drogba was on the bench as he worked his way back to full fitness.
Carlo Ancelotti was characteristically laid back ahead of kick-off, but Italian will have been concerned after admitting his disappointment at a pre-season when Wednesday's loss to Hamburg came in the wake of successive defeats to Ajax and Eintracht Frankfurt.
And the former AC Milan boss will have been even more worried by the manner in which a long pass from Rooney dissected his defence in the opening minutes, with Cole misjudging the flight, before Hilario gathered Valencia's weak lob.
Midfield maestro Scholes was relishing his outing, but his radar was a little off when he miscued a volley after arriving inside the 18-yard area with trademark timing.
The Community Shield is usually more about psychology than tactics, clichés about stating intent and putting down a marker, and it was clear that Chelsea did not enjoy the fact that they were playing second fiddle in the early exchanges.
They promptly responded in an entertaining opening. Nicolas Anelka tried his luck from 20 yards, Edwin van der Sar spilled the dipping shot and was fortunate that Kalou's follow-up rolled across the face of goal.
Van der Sar redeemed himself minutes later when Ivanovic out-jumped Nemanja Vidic to force an excellent save from the 39-year-old Dutchman as he flung himself to his left to palm away the header.
United, though, continued to possess the greater threat and Valencia was thriving on the quarter-back passes of Scholes to give England defender Cole a torrid afternoon.
Cole has been repeatedly linked with Real Madrid this summer and reports have suggested that he requested to move to the Spanish capital before being told he could not leave by Chelsea.
Chasing shadows

It did appear that his mind may be elsewhere as he spent the match chasing Valencia's shadow as United continually targeted the left-back, and to devastating effect in the 41st minute.
Scholes unleashed another rapier 50-yard delivery into Chelsea's inside-right channel for Rooney to centre an immaculate, first-time cross that left Valencia with the task of converting after running off the blindside of Cole.
United deserved their half-time lead. Scholes had been superb.
Ferguson was obviously impressed and felt comfortable enough to make three changes at the break, with Owen, Rooney and Ji-Sung Park being replaced by Hernandez, Berbatov and Nani.
Ancelotti was less taken by the performance of his team and he refrained from making any substitutions, although he may have wished that he had as the same group of players in blue did not appear to have lost a defensive fragility after the break.
Ex-England captain Terry took a risk when he attempted to step up for offside against Mexico international Hernandez, who played a pass that Berbatov could not quite get a toe on.
Ancelotti decided to react on the hour mark and brought on Drogba in place of John Obi Mikel, while Anelka, another man who would have wanted to forget the World Cup after France's soap opera, made way for Daniel Sturridge.
With the introduction of Drogba, Chelsea gained an attacking threat and United's defence, which included Chris Smalling after a 71st minute substitution, certainly had more to do.
Yossi Benayoun, a close-season acquisition from Liverpool, came on for Chelsea as Ancelotti pressed for an equaliser, and the Israeli playmaker almost made an immediate impact when teeing up Sturridge for a dragged long-ranger.
But Hernandez was the new face who will remember his afternoon fondly as in the 76th minute he netted probably the most bizarre goal that will be scored throughout 2010/11.
Valencia again span off the back of Cole to cross low into Chelsea's area and Hernandez arrived at the back post to trip over his own feet, cannon the ball into his face and ricochet into the net.
Chelsea could have been forgiven for going through the motions for the remainder of the match, but Ancelotti's side continued to battle and Kalou was able to set up a tense conclusion when firing in a rebound from close range with seven minutes left to play.
The goal gave Chelsea an incentive and they finished on the front foot, however, their hopes of forcing a penalty shoot-out were gone when Drogba was caught flat-footed a couple of minutes before Berbatov capped a magnificent period of keep-ball with a stylish, lobbed half-volley in injury-time.

SILVER SERVICE ... Fergie lifts yet another trophy after Man United's Community Shield success

FABIO CAPELLO should have been squirming in his seat in shame and embarrassment.

The England coach has spent the past month telling us Wayne Rooney was shot to pieces mentally and physically.
Telling us the Manchester United star was solely to blame for the awful showing at the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Then Rooney comes out and does the Italian in cold blood in front of 85,000 Wembley fans and a worldwide TV audience.
For the striker did more in just 45 minutes of the Community Shield showdown against Double winners Chelsea than during the entire 2010 World Cup.
Which begs the obvious question: Why can Alex Ferguson bring out the best in England's finest footballer when Capello clearly cannot?
Remember, the Three Lions' boss had Rooney in his specialist World Cup boot camp - sorry, training camp - for almost a month before the finals.
Meanwhile, Fergie has picked him up on the back of a vodka and cigarette-fuelled bender and barely a week's pre-season preparation.
Yet Rooney played like a man inspired, a man liberated, a man back in love with the game.
A man worthy of being acclaimed as world class.
A man who played like . . . well, like Wayne Rooney.
It was an astonishing transformation. The man who could not do a thing right for England, did not put a foot wrong for United.
As early as the sixth minute, he was playing a killer ball that scythed Chelsea's defence wide open and put Antonio Valencia one-on-one with the keeper.
It should have led to United grabbing an early lead but the winger's lame finish was in stark contrast to the quality of Rooney's exquisite pass.
Rooney was high-energy, too. Making angles to receive the ball, running the channels, closing down opponents, even chasing back to pull off a fine tackle deep in his own half.
Yet, most importantly, he kept breaking free of his markers to pose a constant threat to the champions' back-line.
In the 18th minute, he raced on to a clever, lofted ball into the box from Paul Scholes but just dragged his shot wide of the far post with Chelsea exposed.
Then five minutes before the break, it was Rooney who created the breakthrough for United.
He raced out to the right wing to collect another forward ball from Scholes, dragging England team-mate John Terry out of the middle in the process.
And before the labouring Blues captain could get close, Rooney whipped the ball across into the area where Terry had just vacated to an unmarked Valencia who was waiting gleefully to seize the opportunity to put United in front.
How Rooney loved that, beating his chest in front of the Chelsea faithful who had taunted him throughout the match by singing 'You fat b*****d'.
Talk about silencing your critics - from rival fans to Capello - in one go, The England star was surely entitled to milk it after all the flak he has had. Rooney did not reappear for the second half. He did not need to. He had made his point, delivering his message of intent for the new season.
Let us hope he can do it again for England in the friendly against Hungary back at Wembley on Wednesday.

But do not hold your breath. Do not forget good old Fabio has gone public about how he is going to give Wazza both barrels today for having gone on the razza last weekend.
He is going to dress him down and remind him of his responsibilities as both an England player and role model.
Call me stupid, but, to me, Rooney's prime responsibility is to score goals for England.
And Capello's main responsibility is to make sure he is in the right frame of mind to do that. Now, OK, he had a big night out. But it was a fortnight before the new season and, uniquely when you consider some of today's top football stars, he was out with his wife and not someone else's.
He is also not the only footballer who smokes cigarettes or who has been daft enough to urinate in public.
So Capello should forget about being the strict disciplinarian, the cane-wielding headmaster figure.
Instead, he should apologise to Rooney for attempting to make him the scapegoat for England's failure in South Africa while shamelessly trying to exonerate himself from all blame.
Then he might get a proper performance from the United ace that helps put England back on the right track. It is not just the Three Lions who have gone off the rails, though.
And Capello is not the only Italian who seems to have lost his way at the helm.
Carlo Ancelotti has endured a truly miserable pre-season and this was the Chelsea chief's fourth successive defeat.
The ease with which United cruised to victory will deepen concerns about the Blues' readiness for the new campaign.
Their once mean defence suddenly looks vulnerable and United new boy Javier Hernandez and fellow sub Dimitar Berbatov took full advantage.
The Mexican's goal, to put United 2-0 ahead, might have been comical - he fell over as he prepared to shoot and somehow managed to fire the ball into his face and see it fortunately rebound into net.
But the harsh reality for Ancelotti is he was right in the clear in the centre of the Chelsea goal with no blue shirts anywhere near.
Even when Salomon Kalou pulled a goal back with six minutes to go, it was United who responded with a spell of Olé football that was finished off with an extravagant lobbed finish from Berbatov.
Ancelotti would not have liked that one bit.
But he will like it even less if Roberto di Matteo's newly-promoted West Brom do the same to his boys come the real kick-off at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
That could not happen, could it?
