Jake: Why don't United ever get penalties at Anfield?
Ha ha. Ferguson said after the 3-3 in 1988 managers 'have to leave here choking on their own vomit, biting their tongue, afraid to tell the truth' after Colin Gibson was sent off (deservedly, I might add).
The last time United got a penalty at Anfield was in 1999, when Jamie Carragher, back when he was an accommodating full-back for visitors at Anfield, hacked Jesper Blomqvist in the chest and Denis Irwin scored before he was ludicrously sent off.
I actually don't think it's a major controversy United haven't had a penalty at Anfield in 16 years. It's probably accentuated by the fact Gerrard took five in five years at Old Trafford, and all but one of those penalties were correctly awarded. Daniel Sturridge's dive over Vidic last season was, as Luis Suarez said, so good nobody at the time disputed the decision apart from Vidic, who knew he hadn't touched him.
The only time in recent years I can recall United were robbed of a penalty at Anfield was when Louis Saha was tripped by Daniel Agger in the O'Shea game back in 2007. Coincidentally, the referee who failed to give that penalty is officiating today: Martin Atkinson.
