[TD="class: quote"]The Turkish Hosiery Manufacturers' Association (ÇSD) sent 12 pairs of socks to the former World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz after he was photographed with torn socks during a visit to Turkey.
Wolfowitz was photographed with holes in his socks at the entrance of the historic Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, one of the oldest cities in Turkey. Wolfowitz's visit was overshadowed in the media by photos of his ripped socks and comments such as "Can't the World Bank manager afford new socks?" The ÇSD hopes to highlight the quality products produced by the Turkish hosiery sector with the move.
ÇSD Vice President Ümit Özüren said although the overall price of socks and other hosiery declined because of the "China effect," Turkish hosiery has maintained its production volume and preserved its weight in the EU market. Özüren said that 90 percent of Turkey's hosiery exports went to the EU. "The share of Turkey's hosiery exports sent the US was very low. This makes the reasons for Wolfowitz's ripped socks a little more obvious," said Özüren, noting that China was a main hosiery exporter to the US.
Özüren called the photo with ripped socks a misfortune and said that he felt unfit as a hosiery manufacturer. "This kind of scene will decrease in direct proportion to the increase in the consumption of Turkish hosiery in the US," said Özüren.
