China rail contractor to buy Sh130bn (US$ 1.5bn) local materials

The Chinese company building the new Nairobi-Mombasa railway has been restricted to buying local materials worth Sh130 billion (US$ 1.5bn) or 40 per cent of project costs. Transport secretary Michael Kamau says the move will boost the economy during the construction phase that starts in September and is expected to end in June 2017.

China Road and Bridge Corporation has been appointed to construct the initial Kenyan leg of the new line, despite widespread criticism that there was no competitive tendering for the work.

Sand, cement, electric cables, galvanised iron and steel top list of items to be bought locally during the construction of 609.3km at a cost of Sh327 billion contract price. This is set to benefit cement makers as well as steel firms and protect the local economy from head-to-head competition with established Asian suppliers.

"This is so far the best deal with any of our development partners," Mr Kamau said yesterday at a symposium organised by the Kenya Railway Corporation (KRC) to sensitise the private sector about the mega project.

"We have set an example for the whole region on engagements with our Asian friends, China in particular."

The project is designed to cut transport costs and boost regional trade and the next phase will run from Nairobi to Malaba to link to the Uganda and Rwanda sections of the standard gauge railway.

"The project has been designed for Kenyan people to register gains from the first day implementation," said Mr Han Chunlin, economic and commercial consular at Chinese Embassy in Nairobi. "Apart from direct benefits like technology transfer and buying of local materials, the China Road & Bridge Corporation will also have to fulfill its social responsibility."

Kenya will receive 90 per cent or Sh294.3 billion of the Mombasa-Nairobi construction price from the China Exim Bank in September. The State has been raising its 10 per cent portion (Sh32.7 billion) through the 1.5 per cent railway development levy.

The government says it has since paid out Sh6.6 billion to the contractor to enable it start its work.

"The government can raise its portion of the SGR budget in just two financial years but we intend to continue collecting the levy in future to finance land acquisition and commuter train," said Mr Kamau.

Apart from building materials, the money will flow into the local economy through land acquisition, security services, skilled and manual labour, logistics, petroleum products, house construction and fencing. Others include supply of explosives, haulage equipment, vehicles and safety equipment.

Chinese company urges court not to stop SGR project

A Chinese firm has pleaded with the court not to stop ongoing construction of the Sh366 billion standard gauge railway (SGR), arguing that it has not trespassed on Kibwezi residents' land.

China Road and Bridge Corporation says in response to a petition filed by Kibwezi West MP Patrick Musimba that its employees have not trespassed on anyone's land, and that the firm has only constructed access roads on land that has already been handed over to it by the National Land Commission.

Mr Musimba claims CRBC has illegally set up two camps, one of which is a stone-crushing site located next to a school, and that it is likely to harm the students' health.

He has sued the National Land Commission, National Environment Management Authority (Nema) and the Attorney General. CRBC has been enjoined as an interested party.

"It is not true that CRBC employees have been trespassing on the property of the residents of Kibwezi. CRBC employees have been surveying the area in order to help with preparations for the construction of the SGR," Hu Zhaoguang, CRBC's deputy general manager says in court filings.

"If CRBC is stopped from conducting the preparatory works, which can be very time consuming the entire timetable for the SGR will be thrown into disarray. CRBC has spent a substantial amount of money to discharge all the work done so far," added Mr Zhaoguang.

The Chinese company is constructing the modern railway line that is designed to link Mombasa to the rest of East Africa.

Looks like there's some skills transfer going on.

^^ mostly Kenyans working in the sleeper factory, according to megaprojectske, most have undergone training....hopefully there's also some Kenyans trained for managerial roles at the factory.

^^ apparently this girder was built by Kenyans too.

Clearly there's some measure of skills transfer going on....but again hopefully some of the more complex engineering aspects are being taught to Kenyan engineers

Busy day on the ground...... SGR full steam ahead!

Example of Basic Skill Transfer. Today Section 7 Steel Fixers and Welders

New workers are taught on how to handle steel

After a brief introduction by the Chinese skillsmen, workers are allowed to use the machines under supervision

Apart from just Welding, the successful candidates are trained on how to repair and maintain equipment on site

Steel fixers undergo an interview

Kenya SGR project aims to promote skills transfer as one of its primary objectives. Hope it is happening all through to management.

Another busy day at the Emali site

One of the many processes continually done at the site......Sand washing 🙂

Step 1:Raw sand is delivered by truck into #hopper

Step 2: Via an automatic conveyor belt, the sand is taken into the washer

Step 3:Clean sand is separated from mud.

Slowly but surely the pieces are coming together....

How the railway sleepers are being made at section 7

RailwaySleepers are cast out of steel moulds which hold upto 10 sleepers. These moulds are first cleaned with oil.

Steel Cables are then added along the sleeper's mould interior to increase structural stability

At the same stage partitions are added to produce the desired number of sleepers which will be 10 per mould

Specially prepared cement is poured into the mounds. At this point the sleepers will be produced upside-down

The Primary vibration stage is supposed to ensure that the concrete has set in well in-between the steel cabling

Once the set is ready, overhead cranes lift it to the steam chamber where it will be dried using hot steam.

Once the set of 10 sleepers is safely placed inside the steam pit, its covered till the next day, temp is monitored

The freshly backed moulds are flipped up-side down so that the sleepers fall gently onto the conveyor system

They are finally cut to make them individual units and staked in sets of 16 sleepers

The final step is to arrange them outside as they await transportation to the railway.

Railway Sleepers ready for installation. The first set will leave Section 7 headed for Athi River.

Just so people don't get confused, the last two posts are from Section7. This new track will facilitate the quick movement of RailwaySleepers from the factory to the storage location at Section7. I guess they are now churning out these things in plenty

The Old and the New. The old railway, visible on the left is very low as compared to the SGR in height

SGR Kenya railway bars and sleepers joint together in stacks at Section7

The first 4 sets of the SGRKenya Railway are complete.
Each set has 45 sleepers and will be placed as one unit by a special machine

This machine ensures the track is smooth and straight

Standard Gauge Railway project is environmental friendly, creating animal passage in the National Parks.Embankments such as this one under construction will facilitate movement of wildlife.

Everything below is happening at Section7

Line 3 below makes its way across the site to the termination point with the SGR main line just outside the site. The SGR main line is yet to be built.

These 2 lines are almost meeting. 4 new lines have been laid at the site (Section7 ). They will join together with the main SGR line outside. All are for transportation of materials inside the site.

Section 7 Track Progress

Line 2 Under construction Section7

This second line that runs parrarell to the T-beams storage location will be used to transport the beams out of the site to the installation site

Line4 moves from the Sleeper Factory to the railway assembly yard. It will be used for moving finished Railway Sleepers to the yard

The first batch of Simple Turnouts have just arrived at Section7. Hate the fact that they are Made in China. Hopefully in future we can start getting these made in the country when we get our iron industry sorted out.
