Everton agree Roberto Martinez compensation with Wigan

Everton have reached an agreement with Wigan over compensation for manager Roberto Martinez and could name him as their boss by Wednesday.
The Spaniard, 39, is thought to have been Everton's first choice to replace David Moyes, who signed a six-year contract to manage Manchester United.
Martinez said last month he would leave Wigan after four years at the helm.
"Bill Kenwright [Everton chairman] and myself have agreed a deal," Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told BBC Sport.

Age: 39

Playing career: Real Zaragoza (1993-94), Balaguer (94-95), Wigan Athletic (95-2001), Motherwell (01-02), Walsall (02-03), Swansea (03-06), Chester City (06-07).

Playing honours: Copa del Rey (1994), Football League Third Division (1997), Football League Trophy (1999 & 2006)

Managerial career: Swansea (2007-09) and Wigan Athletic (2009-13).

Managerial honours: Football League One (2008) & FA Cup (2013).

Last week, the Toffees were given permission to speak to Martinez following his request to leave the FA Cup winners after their eight-year Premier League stay came to an end last season.
Whelan originally told BBC Radio 5 live at the time that "Roberto has resigned", but a Wigan statement in response said that Martinez remained in charge at the DW Stadium but had been given permission to talk to other clubs.
Martinez, who joined Wigan from Swansea in June 2009, was a target for Aston Villa in June 2011 but opted to stay. He was also strongly linked with the Liverpool job last summer.
In his first managerial role, Martinez guided Swansea to promotion to the Championship in 2008.
Then he joined Wigan - a team for whom he played for six years from 1995 - keeping the club in the Premier League for three seasons despite working with a lower budget than many of his rivals.
Under his reign, Wigan finished 16th twice and 15th before slipping to 18th this season, although the Latics continued to attract praise for their style of football.
Despite their relegation, Wigan's shock 1-0 FA Cup victory against Manchester City at Wembley means they will compete in next season's Europa League.

[h=1]West Ham bid for Spain striker Alvara Negredo rejected[/h]
West Ham have had a £14.5m bid for Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo rejected, according to the Spanish club's president.
Jose Maria Del Nido said Sevilla were under no pressure to sell, having already agreed a £17m-plus deal with Manchester City for winger Jesus Navas.
"West Ham offered 17m (euros) with more in incentives but we do not value the offer and the player refused," he said

UNITED STEP UP RONALDO BID

MANCHESTER UNITED have stepped up their efforts to make Cristiano Ronaldo the signing of the summer.

The Red Devils are convinced they can take advantage of uncertainty at Real Madrid to bring him back home to Old Trafford.

And they are prepared to offer £65million plus a player to land the superstar, 28, who is still a hero with the United faithful.

Ronaldo is also understood to be keen on the move.

He has turned down offers from Real Madrid to sign a new deal with only two years left on his current contract.

Real will not give up trying to keep him.

But they have already made contingency plans to bring in Gareth Bale from Tottenham in a switch worth £80m.

They also know that they cannot afford to let Ronaldo’s contract run down and now would be the last chance to get big money back on him.

Ronaldo has put his house up for sale in Madrid and did not play in Real’s final game of the season after falling out with departing manager Jose Mourinho.

The player left United for Madrid in an £80m move in 2009. While he has won a Spanish title and the Copa Del Rey, he has not always been happy at the Bernabeu.

He missed many of his old team-mates at United and kept in touch with Alex Ferguson.

Ronaldo was disappointed when Fergie retired but he still fancies a return.

United have made contact with his representatives.

Sponsor Nike are also in on the deal.

United would make him their joint top earner with Wayne Rooney on £250,000 a week. While Paris Saint-Germain could top that, it is not just about the money for Ronaldo.

Lewandowski close to ?club of choice? June 5, 2013

Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski is hopeful of joining the club of his choice - widely believed to be Bayern Munich - but has refused to reveal their identity.

Lewandowski, 24, has long been linked with a move away from Dortmund this summer, with the European champions believed to be close to completing a deal for the player, who has previously confirmed that he has reached an agreement with the club.

Outgoing Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes suggested a deal was already in place after last month’s Champions League final, while one of Lewandowski’s agents said he expected the transfer to be completed over the coming weeks.

But although fresh details of a move to the German champions have yet to surface, the Poland international says he is on the verge of departing Dortmund.

“I’d like to think that now everything has been resolved and I will be able to join the club of my choice,” he told SportBild.

Lewandowski, currently preparing for Poland’s World Cup qualifier in Moldova on Friday, went on to praise the club he has been at since 2010, but believes he is ready for a new chapter in his career.

“Dortmund is a fantastic club, which I will always admire,” he said. “But for my future I am wishing for a new challenge.”

Earlier this week, WAZ reported that Lewandowski, who has one more year left to run on his Dortmund contract, had already begun clearing out his home in the city.

Everton set to unveil Martinez
June 5, 2013

Everton are set to confirm Roberto Martinez as their new manager later on Wednesday, ESPN understands.

The club have called a press conference for 4pm UK time, at which their new manager is expected to appear.

Martinez has been the leading candidate to take charge at Goodison Park since it was announced on May 9 that David Moyes would be leaving to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

The 39-year-old said last week that he wanted to leave Wigan, having guided them to the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

He met Everton chairman Bill Kenwright twice for talks last week, before a £1.5 million compensation deal was agreed on Monday to buy out the remaining 12 months of his Wigan contract.

Martinez is expected to bring with him assistants Graeme Jones and Kevin Reeves, along with goalkeeping coach Inaki Bergara and conditioning coach Richard Evans in a new-look backroom team.

Kenwright had also considered Porto boss Vitor Pereira and Red Bull Salzburg sporting director Ralf Rangnick for the Everton job.

But Martinez was his first choice, despite being unable to save Wigan from relegation to the Championship in May.

Steven Caldwell, who played at Wigan during the 2010-11 season before spending two years at Birmingham and then moving into Major League Soccer with Toronto, believes Martinez will succeed at the Toffees.

The defender told TalkSPORT: "He's a fantastic manager. He's very thorough, organised, a good tactician and an excellent coach.

"Roberto is ready to move to that level. It's time for him to test himself with a bigger budget and a better quality of player. We need to see if he can now take his philosophy to a higher level in the Premier League and if he can achieve similar results to David Moyes.

"He is a big enough name to attract talent. Throughout Europe, I think he will attract top players. He's got a very hard task in trying to follow Moyes though, who was a tremendous manager."

ROB’S SWEET ON THE TOFFEES

ROBERTO MARTINEZ has been named as David Moyes’ successor at Everton.

The Spaniard, 39, has signed a four-year contract at Goodison Park, leaving relegated Wigan after four years in charge.

Martinez’s appointment ends weeks of speculation following the appointment of Moyes as Alex Ferguson’s replacement at Manchester United last month.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright first met the ex-Latics boss in London last Wednesday.

He had previously interviewed internal hopefuls Phil Neville, Alan Stubbs and David Weir, while German Ralf Rangnick was also in the frame.

A Toffees statement read: “Everton Football Club is today delighted to confirm the appointment of Roberto Martinez as its next manager.

“The 39-year-old Spaniard joins from Wigan Athletic and has signed a four-year contract at Goodison Park.

“Mr Martinez will be officially unveiled as the club’s 14th permanent manager at a media conference on Wednesday afternoon.”

A Wigan statement thanked Martinez for his service at the Latics.

It read: "Roberto’s influence at the club, both as a player and manager, an association that spanned over a decade, will remain unforgettable to all Latics fans.

"The club would like to place on record its appreciation for his tireless work during that time, culminating in FA Cup glory last month at Wembley Stadium.

"The club now begins its search for a new manager as we seek to make a return to the Premier League and progress in the Europa League."

Reports: Ancelotti nears Real switch
June 6, 2013

French media reported on Thursday that Carlo Ancelotti's protracted departure from Paris Saint-Germain and predicted arrival at Real Madrid is reaching its conclusion.

There had been precious little change in the situation since Ancelotti, 53, asked to be freed from the final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes on May 19.

However, with the re-election of Florentino Perez as Madrid president earlier this week and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reportedly having finally accepted he cannot retain the Italian, L'Equipe - echoing reports in Spanish counterpart Marca on Wednesday - claimed 'Ancelotti, very close to Real' while Le Parisien headlined its story: 'The Ancelotti case in the final straight'.

The French capital's daily reported Perez, a long-time admirer of Ancelotti, called PSG after his re-election on Tuesday to accelerate talks that began two weeks ago to negotiate Ancelotti's departure from the French capital. L'Equipe reported Madrid would have to pay €4 million to buy out Ancelotti's contract, while Le Parisien claimed it would take between €6 and €7 million.

Both papers agreed no date has yet been set for Ancelotti to sit down with Al Khelaifi to finalise the matter.

Perez, speaking to Onda Cero radio on Wednesday night, played down talk the Italian was on the verge of making the switch.

"Ancelotti is a great person," he said. "He was a great player, now coach - one of those who are able to win leagues, who know how to manage high level players... but he is at PSG so today he is not an option."

Perez had earlier indicated that Zinedine Zidane could yet succeed Jose Mourinho, and he added: "From next week with Zidane we will see.

"Everything is possible in life. PSG must do what they think is best. If the possibility of Ancelotti is there we will analyse it."

L'Equipe also maintains Al Khelaifi would prefer sporting director Leonardo take the reins of the first team. However, the Brazilian, who has left Paris for a short holiday, will most likely have to wait at least until June 20, when his appeal against his nine-month ban is heard by the French Football Federation's Supreme Commission for Appeals before his future role is decided.
