David Moyes agrees deal to make Guillermo Varela first Manchester United signing

David Moyes is set to make Penarol defender Guillermo Varela his first signing at Manchester United.
Varela, a powerful right-back, impressed during a recent trial at Old Trafford and now Moyes has given the go-ahead for a £2.5million deal.

The 20-year-old is highly rated in in his native Uruguay, with AC Milan and Juventus both thought to have previously shown an interest in his services.

However, it is United who have won the race, with Penarol accepting a £1.5million offer with a further £1million set to follow in bonus payments.

Varela is now due in Manchester before the weekend to complete personal terms and a medical, before United lodge a work permit claim with the FA.

It's thought that Moyes considers Varela as a first-team player for season, where he will provide competition for Rafael, Fabio and the versatile Phil Jones.

Varela will sign a four-year-deal and becomes the first Uruguayan to play for the club since Diego Forlan in 2004.

The 28-year-old — who had expressed his desire to sign for City — passed a medical today after the two clubs agreed a £30million fee.
After finalising the deal, the Brazilian said his ambition was to win titles at the club.
Fernandinho said: “Playing in the Premier League for City is like a dream.
“My ambition here is to win all the titles, the team here is strong, and so is the greatness of the club and the supporters.

Reports: Ancelotti nears Real switch

French media reported on Thursday that Carlo Ancelotti's protracted departure from Paris Saint-Germain and predicted arrival at Real Madrid is reaching its conclusion.

There had been precious little change in the situation since Ancelotti, 53, asked to be freed from the final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes on May 19.

However, with the re-election of Florentino Perez as Madrid president earlier this week and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reportedly having finally accepted he cannot retain the Italian, L'Equipe - echoing reports in Spanish counterpart Marca on Wednesday - claimed 'Ancelotti, very close to Real' while Le Parisien headlined its story: 'The Ancelotti case in the final straight'.

The French capital's daily reported Perez, a long-time admirer of Ancelotti, called PSG after his re-election on Tuesday to accelerate talks that began two weeks ago to negotiate Ancelotti's departure from the French capital. L'Equipe reported Madrid would have to pay €4 million to buy out Ancelotti's contract, while Le Parisien claimed it would take between €6 and €7 million.

Both papers agreed no date has yet been set for Ancelotti to sit down with Al Khelaifi to finalise the matter.

Perez, speaking to Onda Cero radio on Wednesday night, played down talk the Italian was on the verge of making the switch.

"Ancelotti is a great person," he said. "He was a great player, now coach - one of those who are able to win leagues, who know how to manage high level players... but he is at PSG so today he is not an option."

Perez had earlier indicated that Zinedine Zidane could yet succeed Jose Mourinho, and he added: "From next week with Zidane we will see.

"Everything is possible in life. PSG must do what they think is best. If the possibility of Ancelotti is there we will analyse it."

L'Equipe also maintains Al Khelaifi would prefer sporting director Leonardo take the reins of the first team. However, the Brazilian, who has left Paris for a short holiday, will most likely have to wait at least until June 20, when his appeal against his nine-month ban is heard by the French Football Federation's Supreme Commission for Appeals before his future role is decided.

Guillermo Varela: Manchester United sign Uruguayan defender

Manchester United have completed a deal to sign Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varela from Atletico Penarol for an undisclosed fee.

Varela, 20, had a trial at Old Trafford last season and is David Moyes's first signing as Manchester United manager. The defender has made one appearance for Penarol but has nine caps for Uruguay's Under-20 side.

Varela is taking part in the Under-20 World Championships, which runs from 21 June to 13 July, in Turkey.

Penarol head coach Jorge Da Silva believes the youngster has earned the move. Da Silva said: "This is what he deserves. It is a shame to see him go but you can't deny him the opportunity to join a club like this."

Rafael was United's regular right-back last season, with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling also featuring in the role.

The deal is done.

[h=3]ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI will more than double his money if he joins Manchester United.[/h] The Polish striker earns £2million a year - almost £40,000 a week - at Borussia Dortmund.
But United would be prepared to pay him £90,000 a week - nearly £4.7m a year.
The player was expecting to follow his team-mate Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich.
But Dortmund blocked that this week saying they were adamant he would not go to their Bundesliga rivals and the team that beat them in the Champions League Final.
The player himself was stunned by that development but does not believe he will still be at Dortmund next season.
Lewandowski said: "I do not think that this is the final decision and I expect the situation to change.
"I am enjoying my holiday for now but I hope things move forward pretty soon and the situation changes.
"I do not get upset about anything."
United have now been told they can have the Polish striker if they offer £25.5m.
Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has said that the deal to Munich will not go through because they simply had not bid.
Watzke said: "Robert will definitely not transfer to Bayern Munich in 2013.
"This is final. We have informed Robert and his advisers. The Bayern case is closed because there was no written offer."
But Dortmund will not want to hang on to Lewandowski as he has only a year left on his current contract and they risk losing him for nothing.
Meanwhile United have completed the first signing since David Moyes became boss by snapping up Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varela from Atletico Penarol.
The deal is worth an initial £1m but could rise to £2.5m based on appearances and the 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract.
Varela said: "I'm very pleased to be a part of this club.
"This is a huge club that has won everything and I really hope that continues."

Chelsea's first signing of the new Jose Mourinho era looks set to be completed very soon following the news that Andre Schurrle is set to make the switch to Stamford Bridge this summer.
A statement on the Chelsea FC official website reads: "Chelsea Football Club and Bayer 04 Leverkusen have reached an agreement for the transfer of André Schürrle, subject to the completion of legal documentation and related matters, including personal terms and passing a medical."
