A Spaniard found murdered near a Ukrainian city hosting Euro 2012 matches was a businessman and not a football supporter, police said on Saturday, despite earlier local media reports.
"The murder did take place in the Donetsk region", which is one of the host cities for the tournament, said regional police spokesman Igor Domine.
"But this man was not a football fan. He was a Spanish businessman. He arrived in Donetsk before the start of the championship," Domine said, adding that the crime took place last month.
European champions Spain, favourites to retain the title they won four years ago in Austria and Switzerland, are to play their group games in tournament co-hosts Poland.
The Spanish man was killed in the small town of Makeyevka, some five kilometres (3.1 miles) from Donetsk, the spokesman added.
Three people are suspected of killing the victim, including a taxi driver who took him from Donetsk to Makeyevka, Domine said.
Police began a search for the man after staff at the hotel where he was staying raised the alarm when he failed to return, police and local media said.
