True that, smart people have been around throughout the ages, the ancients people would have definitely catch up with our technology with ease. Our generation most likely have been dumbed down with technologies in a way that we can't come up with original thoughts anymore. May be this explains why we've never had any paradigm shift since Einstein theory of relativity.
 

Exacly. Modern technological inventions like the Las Vegas sphere are very impressive. In equal measure, so are those of the past. You cannot really argue which one is superior than the other. Ancient scientists would also be puzzled by the engineering marvels we have today like microchip technology, supertall and megatall skyscrapers et al., same way we are puzzled by their works. There are a lot of missing links in history; as you said, ancient engineers probably knew the Newtonian laws before us/Isaac Newton. The missing links is like how did they build such without advanced modern technology; but they were "advanced" in their own way, therefore should not be underestimated.

The 18th century is definitely the modern era. Industrial revolution kicked off in the mid 1700s therefore that period could be termed as "modern" since many of the inventions of today have been brought by the industrial revolution.

Even if there hasn't been any major groundbreaking in the field of Mathematics/Physics, you cannot really compare the situation in the 1700s to that of today. Things like the internet and computers were discovered almost at the end of the 20th century. So the two periods cannot be the compared equally, right now we are definitely more advanced. Scientists like of the 20th century like Einstein, Tesla etc had no advanced tools for doing complex Mathematics and probably relied on their brains for those complex calculations. While today, majority of the people, above the 95th percentile cannot even do a simple Mathematics problem. I just develop a headache from calculating 21-9 (21 minus 9) off head. But we have computers that can do it for us with ease so why should I strain my brain?


As much as the modern engineering is complex, so is the old. Designing integrated circuits is as difficult as constructing a Gothic cathedral in 1100 AD. That is why the ancient marvels are preserved to avoid losing their ingenuity. Many modern scholars have spent years, some even their entire lifetime, studying the construction technologies used in ancient construction.
 
Science is developmental/gradual. It is true Faraday for instance is known for his theory of electromagnetic induction. But other people come and develop it. It is made to be better than what was invented. Eg, smartphones use electomagnetic induction for wireless charging. This is and advancement of Faraday's electromagnetic induction studies. This does not mean that Faraday invented wireless charging, or did he? There were no smartphones in the past, his invention was used to develop a technology that could charge smartphones without the need of wires. Therefore, it is gradual and not that since it was invented years ago then that's just it. The developments that build on those inventions are equally to be credited

Math and physics hasn't changed much, only few details here and their but most of what has changed in the last 100 years, is the application of math and physics in the area of electronics. The invention of transistors and later on, integrated circuits, have laid the foundation of our modern lives today, compared to the times of vacuum diodes.

Your cellphone today is a million times more powerful than Personal computers of the early 2000s. Although, the ability to do iterative tasks have increased dramatically that doesn't mean, with our tools, one can be a better mathematician than the Alan Turings of the 1930s.

Mathematics is not arithmetics rather the ability to solve problems conceptually. You don't need a computer to do that, only intelligent brain. This is the reason, computers have a hard time finding the nth prime, simply because at the machine level, computers are dumb, they do things iteratively, even though we can make them smart by training with neural networks. They still loop through over and over, and if you ask me, that is a very primitive way to solve problems.

I get what you are trying to say. The credit for discovering electromagnetic induction definitely goes to Faraday. But there are other instances where one could also make another discovery out of it and still get credited for it.

A case example is Newton's theory of gravity and Einstein's theory of relativity. Newton's theory of gravity was developed in the 17th century (Published in 1687) while Einstein's theory of relativity was in the 20th century (1905; Special relativity and 1915 for General Relativity). Both of these theories give explanations that help us understand the working of gravity. However, Einstein's is more comprehensive and accurate than Newton's.

Newton is credited for inventing gravity. Newton's law of Universal gravitation explains gravity as a force operating instantaneously between masses, and the gravitational force decreases with the square of the distance between them (As explained using his formula of Universal gravitation). According to Newton, the force of gravity between two objects is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers - From the formula (Claude Ziad El-Bayeh, 2014). And this theory was the one used for centuries to explain the motion of bodies of the solar system and bodies on Earth (Claude Ziad El-Bayeh, 2014).

Einstein's general theory of relativity, on the other hand, gave a completely new explanation of gravity. According to general relativity, gravity is brought about by the curvature of spacetime caused by mass and energy (Trevor et al., 1921). This theory predicts phenomena such as gravitational time dilation, gravitational lensing, and the presence of black holes, which are not accounted for in Newtonian gravity (Trevor et al., 1921).

After the verification of Einstein's theory by the scientific community, general relativity replaced Newton's theory as the most comprehensive and accurate explanation of gravity. Not that Newton's theory was wrong, but it was not as comprehensive as Einstein's. Einstein is credited for the theory of relativity as it gives a more precise and comprehensive understanding of gravity. The credit goes to Einstein and not Newton. Therefore, even if gravity was invented by Newton, Einstein takes credit for developing a comprehensive theory that replaced Newton's.

And by the way, Einstein's theory of relativity is the most famous among his works. Many people do not even know about his other works like the Photoelectric Effect. So credit should be given where due. He did not invent gravity but helped give a better understanding of gravity.
