Huyu jamaa naye vipi akili zake?

Mikel Arteta’s system is built primarily on positional familiarity. His belief is that every player should know where their team-mates will be, at all times. [@SamJDean, Telegraph] #afc

. [@SamJDean]

From 4-4-2 to 2-3-2-3: How Mikel Arteta's tactical genius propelled Arsenal's charge

As Arteta approaches the third anniversary of taking the Arsenal job, his footballing beliefs and are finally having the desired impact

From 4-4-2 to 2-3-2-3: How Mikel Arteta's tactical genius propelled Arsenal's charge
There are many factors behind Arsenal’s success so far this season, and the most obvious of those is perhaps the most significant: time. Mikel Arteta has had nearly three years in the job, making him the sixth-longest serving current manager in the Premier League, and the cumulative effect of all those matches, sessions and meetings is now apparent every time Arsenal take to the field.

The current Arsenal is a team that plays in recognisable patterns and shapes, forming a visual demonstration of their manager’s footballing vision. A tactics board in real time, and a structure in which each individual is connected to the other.

Among those who appointed Arteta, and subsequently awarded him a new contract at a period of uncertainty for the team last season, there has always been a belief that this day of realisation would come. If one thing was obvious about the Spaniard, it was that he possessed a tactical knowledge and understanding of the highest order.

This was clear during his playing days, when Arteta earned a reputation for being a deep thinker on the game. In 2012, the story goes, Pep Guardiola called a 30-year-old Arteta to ask for his advice ahead of a Champions League match between Barcelona and Chelsea. A few years later, of course, Guardiola appointed Arteta as his assistant at Manchester City.

Speak to anyone at Arsenal now, either in the squad or around it, and they will often tell you the same thing: Arteta’s tactical brain is supreme. “The manager is a football genius,” said Kieran Tierney last year. “I have never seen something like this before,” said Granit Xhaka.

One player has told Telegraph Sport that Arteta will effectively explain to his team how they will play through an opponent, based on how the rival side will defend, and then on the training ground they will repeat that precise move until it has almost become second nature.

That could be seen even in the awkward early days of Arteta’s reign, when there were fleeting signs of promise without enormous strides forward. For a spell in 2020, Arsenal scored the same choreographed goal — the ball worked out of the right-back position and then switched towards the left — with such regularity that it became, frankly, embarrassing for opposition teams to fall into the same trap.

A stunning team move, a stunning finish! 🤩

🗣️ KDB on Arteta:

“I see a lot of similarities with the way we play, but that’s always been his style. I saw an evolution [in Arteta] after 3 years when he left. It’s nice to see that he got the time from Arsenal & happy for him it’s going well.” #afc
