The England striker was unable to mark his debut with a goal but gave a typically energetic and industrious display to provide hope he will prove a hit at the Emirates Stadium
All eyes were on Arsenal's new signing Danny Welbeck throughout their meeting with Manchester City on Saturday as the €20 million signing from Manchester United made his debut in the 2-2 draw at the Emirates.
The 23-year-old striker will be tasked with filling in for Olivier Giroud, who is out for the rest of the year with an ankle injury, and came into the match with his confidence sky-high following his midweek brace for England against Switzerland. That, perhaps, explains why he opted to attempt to chip Joe Hart from 12 yards out when through on goal after just 12 minutes, instead of coolly slotting beyond the goalkeeper.
Louis van Gaal delivered a damming assessment of Welbeck in his press conference on Friday, stating he was allowed to leave Old Trafford because he was not of the same standard as Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney. Welbeck is a talented footballer but thus far in his career he has been unable to marry technique, pace and industry with the instinct of a cold-blooded killer in front of goal. He was presented with the golden chance to mark his debut with an early goal when he latched onto David Silva's errant back pass but instead of side-footing the ball past his England teammate, he went for a flashy chip that clipped the post.
While he will regret not getting off to a glorious start by scuppering that chance, at least he demonstrated anticipation and desire to take advantage of Silva's slip. Giroud, the man who would otherwise have been in that position, might not have possessed the acceleration to make the most of the opportunity.

That miss appeared to be weighing heavily on Welbeck's mind for the remainder of the first half. Though his work rate and effort levels rarely dipped, he struggled to link the play effectively and, understandably at this early stage in his Arsenal career, was not on the same wavelength as the side's creators in chief Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
Less than 20 minutes after that missed opportunity, he was given a clear illustration of the striker Arsenal need him to become by Sergio Aguero whose clever run to the near post was rewarded with a perfect low centre by Jesus Navas. The Argentina international may only have been seven yards out but still needed show the presence of mind to lift and curl the ball over the onrushing Wojciech Szczesny – inevitably he was up to the task.
Welbeck seemed to come alive once Arsenal got themselves back into the game through Jack Wilshere's wonderful individual goal, setting the tone by harrying and hassling City's centre-halves and almost engineered himself a goal by outmuscling Martin Demichelis but didn't quite have the room to squeeze a shot past Hart.
Despite his inability to make the difference for his side, Welbeck and the Gunners fans should be pleased with his performance. It was a positive sign for the future and he will be hoping to enjoy a more fruitful debut in another competition - when he makes his first appearance for the north London side in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.
Arsene Wenger experimented with Alexis through the middle against Everton in the 2-2 draw last month but the Chile forward lasted only 45 minutes before he was replaced by Giroud, who helped salvage a draw.
Without the Frenchman to lead the line and with Sanchez still bedding in, Welbeck will mostly likely be asked to lead the line again during the week. It's a workload Welbeck will have to get used to considering the lack of options his manager has at his disposal and he will already be worrying about his new recruit after he was seen signalling for the physio just moments before his debut ended in the 87[SUP]th[/SUP] minute.
