A set of red loafers, manufactured by papal shoemaker Adriano Stefanelli, Novara - Worn by H.H. Pope Benedict XVI

NOTE:

  • Before 1969, the Pope, like all bishopsand prelates, wore Episcopal sandalsduring the Mass. The color of the Episcopal sandals varied to match the liturgical color of the Mass.
  • The Papal outdoor shoes were made of plain red Morocco leather and had a wide cross in gold braid.
  • Pope Paul VI eliminated the gold cross and completely discontinued the custom of kissing the papal foot.
  • Pope Benedict XVI restored the use of the red papal shoes, which are provided by his personal cobbler, Antonio Arellano from the Gammarelli shop located in the Saint Clare's (Italian: Santa Chiara) district of Rome. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI also restored the use of the white damask silk Paschal mozzetta, which was previously worn with white silk slippers.
  • The red shoes probably date from early Roman times. The Kings of Rome, who were also the Pontifex Maximus (high priest) wore red boots. When the Roman Republic was established the Pontifex Maximus continued to wear red boots. When Christianity became the state religion, the popes became the Pontifex Maximus, and adopted the red shoes.

toka enzi za Roma empire ni watu watatu tu waliokuwa wakiruhusiwa kuvaa viatu vyekundu nao ni the Emperor, the Empress, and the Pope....so ni utaratibu toka enzi hizo nakesho atavitudisha viatu hivyo anavyong'atuka..
