Susuviri,
The debates are meant to persuade the independent and undecided voters.
Yes McCain gave an outstanding perfomance but to the wrong crowd.
He was showing his muscles to his base, the Republicans, assuring them that he is tough, he will cut tax, reduce spending, rid big government and more the Pro-Life. McCain worked hard to convience his base that he is a true conservative.
Even the statement "I am not George Bush" has come to late even though the rest of his policies, sounded similar to Bush and some of us who admired McCain of 2000, he has failed to proove that he is still a Maverick.
What he (McCain) failed to do is to connect himself with Independents and convincingly win their votes or sway their undecided vote to him.
His stand on health, education, economy showed him to be similar to Bush.
His strong opinion on Roe versus Wade and repeatdly criticizing Pro-Choice rather than showing respect to difference of opinion will hurt him most wih the Women voting block.
One would even question if this is how he strongly feels about abortion and his claim to be the top ProLife individual, how and why he even considered Joe Lieberman or Tom Ridge two strong Pro-Choice individuals to serve under him? If he were to become and president and Joe or Tom were his vice president and an opening at supreme court comes to his table, who would he have chosen?
However he convincingly damaged himself to independents was to show these independents that he does not have sound judgment, he is just like Washington and all the straight talk express is to nowhere.
Worse enough was his failure to sell his own vice president choice!
So, my final verdict is that he has been able to rally his base and party and show that he has a back bone and he is true to the core values of Republican Party, but failed miserably to win over Independents and Democrats!
